Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Tom,
I am writing on behalf of 7th West Entertainment to invite you to open a new theatre called “Azx,” which will be the largest theatre in the province of British Columbia.
The opening ceremony will be held on the 16th of September 2026 at 72 Street, Vancouver, beside the Science World building. Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift will perform at the beginning of the event.
As the most famous actor of the year, you would be a wonderful addition to the event. We would be delighted if you were able to attend on the mentioned date. Your participation really matters to us.
As I mentioned above, you are the most famous and talented actor of the era. People really appreciate your presence. It will influence the younger generations who are currently studying roleplay.
Please let me know whether you are available by next week. We sincerely hope you will accept our invitation.
Yours sincerely,
Chamath

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the new theatre, issued a formal invitation, and explained the rationale for choosing the actor. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the start. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and the importance of their potential attendance. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the theatre's features or the nature of the opening ceremony to further extend your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the details, the invitation, the justification, and finally the closing. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'As I mentioned above' and 'As the most famous actor' to link your thoughts. While the structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive. Incorporating a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases would improve the flow and help you achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have used an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'on behalf of,' 'opening ceremony,' and 'participation.' The language is appropriate for the context of a formal invitation. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items that characterize higher band scores. For instance, repeating 'famous' and 'actor' limits the lexical variety. Using more precise synonyms or collocations would demonstrate a stronger command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing on behalf of... to invite you' and 'It will influence the younger generations who are currently studying roleplay.' The grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. While your control is solid, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more varied sentence patterns, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
