Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Kamal Khan,

I am writing on behalf of our entertainment company to invite you to officially open our new theatre, which is scheduled to open next month.

The new theatre is located in the center of the city and has been designed to provide audiences with modern and comfortable entertainment experience. It has a seating capacity of 900 people, excellent lighting and sound systems. We also plan to organise plays, musical performances and cultural events there throughout the year.

We would be honoured if you could attend the opening ceremony and officially inaugurate the theatre. The event is planned for Saturday, 16 October, and will be attended by local artists and members of the public.

We believe you would be the ideal person to open the theatre because of your outstanding acting career and popularity among audiences. Your presence would also attract considerable public attention and make this occasion memorable for everyone.

I hope that you will accept our invitation and attend the event.

Yours sincerely,

Vishal Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You provided clear information about the new theatre, including its location, capacity, and facilities. The invitation is polite and formal, and you provided a logical justification for why the actor is the ideal candidate for the opening. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal business letter. All parts of the prompt are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. The response is well-structured and meets all requirements for a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the specific details and the final invitation. Each paragraph has a clear focus, and the transition between the description of the theatre and the invitation is smooth. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'The new theatre', 'We also plan to', and 'Your presence would also', which help to link ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall readability of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases such as 'officially inaugurate', 'seating capacity', and 'considerable public attention' demonstrate a good command of formal language appropriate for this context. The word choice is accurate throughout, and there are no instances where vocabulary limitations impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations could elevate the response further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'We would be honoured if you could attend...' and 'The new theatre is located in the center of the city and has been designed to...'. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The sentences are error-free for the most part, demonstrating a high level of accuracy and control over complex sentence forms.
