Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Diljit,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing on behalf of a Star Entertainment Company to invite you to officially open our new theatre, which is scheduled to open next month.
Our new theatre, located in downtown Toronto, is a modern 500- seats venue designed to host a wide range of performances, including plays, musical events, comedy shows and cultural events. It has comfortable seating and excellent backstage facilities. We believe it will be an important entertainment destination for residents and visitors.
We would be honoured if you could attend the opening ceremony and officially inaugurate the theatre. The event is planned for Saturday; 15 November and we would be delighted if you could give short speech and cut the opening ribbon. We would, of course arrange the necessary transport and travel arrangements for you.
I believe you would be the ideal person for opening the theatre because you are a highly respected actor and singer and famous all around the world. You outstanding performances highly encourage young people who really love music, singing and art. Your presence would also attract considerable public attention and make the opening ceremony a memorable occasion.
I sincerely hope that you will accept our invitation. We would be delighted to welcome you and celebrate this special occasion with you.
Yours sincerely,
Lovejeet Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. The letter begins by providing relevant information about the new theatre, mentioning its location in downtown Toronto, its capacity as a modern 500-seat venue, and the types of performances it will host. Secondly, a clear invitation is extended to the actor, including specific details such as the date of the event, 15 November, and the exact roles expected of him, such as giving a short speech and cutting the ribbon. Finally, the response effectively explains why the recipient is an ideal choice, highlighting his status as a globally renowned actor and singer whose achievements inspire young people. The purpose of the letter is maintained throughout with an appropriate semi-formal tone suited to a correspondence with a famous personality. All bullet points are fully and effectively addressed, warranting a high band score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, each serving a distinct communicative purpose: introduction and invitation context, details about the venue, specifics of the event and logistical support, reasons for choosing the actor, and a polite concluding remark. Cohesive devices are used accurately and appropriately, such as transitional phrases like 'Our new theatre', 'The event is planned', and 'I believe you would be'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly from one point to the next without any noticeable mechanical or repetitive phrasing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally flexible range of vocabulary suitable for a formal or semi-formal invitation letter. Less common phrases such as 'officially inaugurate', 'entertainment destination', 'opening ceremony', and 'considerable public attention' are used effectively. There is only a minor mechanical slip in the phrase 'You outstanding performances', where the possessive pronoun 'Your' was intended. Spelling is otherwise accurate and word choices are natural, allowing the message to be communicated clearly and fluently. The vocabulary range easily satisfies the requirements for a Band 7 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and subordinate constructions (e.g., 'which is scheduled to open next month', 'We would be honoured if you could attend'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are well controlled throughout the letter. The vast majority of sentences are error-free, with only a minor typographical error ('500- seats' instead of '500-seat') and a missing possessive determiner ('You outstanding performances' instead of 'Your'). These minor slips do not impede communication at all, reflecting a strong command of grammar and punctuation that aligns closely with Band 8 descriptors.
