Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Diljit,
Hope this letter finds you well! I am writing to invite you to on the opening of a new cinema theatre in Calgary, which is built by our company to entertain people.
In Canada, the company already owned five theatres, and this is our next project to build a new one in the Calgary downtown. It can be accessible for people to enjoy movies. People often travel long distance to go to cinemas to watch movies. This would be a great idea for all ages to entertain themselves without any long distance issues. This is not only for Hollywood movies but also other religion people come and watch movies according to their taste and connect with their culture.
I really want you to come on the first day of opening of this cinema hall. Everything will be done in the last week of September. It would be grateful if you could make a plan to visit here. I understand your busy schedule; however, coming for only a few hours on the inauguration of theatre is valuable for the company.
I would really appreciate it if you could visit here. Your presence would be helpful for us to advertise our project in front of people with positive energy. Having a face-to-face interaction with customers will give an opportunity in increasing the company’s productivity.
Looking forwards to hearing a positive response from you as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully,
Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all the required bullet points from the prompt effectively. You successfully provide information about the new theatre by mentioning its location in Calgary downtown and its purpose of bringing entertainment to the community. You clearly invite Mr. Diljit to the opening ceremony and explain why he would be a suitable guest, pointing out that his presence would bring positive energy and boost company productivity through face-to-face interaction with customers. The tone of the letter is polite and appropriate for a formal business invitation. All requirements of the task have been addressed with a clear and purposeful approach, fitting comfortably into Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with the opening and purpose of the letter, moving into details about the theatre and the invitation, and concluding with a call to action. You make use of cohesive devices such as 'In Canada', 'This would be', and 'however', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas clearly. Referencing and pronoun use are generally clear, allowing the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly, which aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or a solid 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message. You attempt some less common lexical items, such as 'inauguration', 'productivity', and 'schedule', demonstrating an awareness of formal register. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'invite you to on the opening' (instead of 'invite you to the opening') and 'other religion people' (instead of 'people of other religions'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, making this a strong fit for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional ideas and subordinate clauses, such as 'I understand your busy schedule; however, coming for only a few hours... is valuable'. There are several grammatical errors present, including preposition misuse ('company already owned' instead of 'company already owns', 'come on the first day' instead of 'come for the first day') and minor phrasing awkwardness like 'long distance issues'. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning of your sentences remains clear. This reflects the characteristics of Band 6.0.
