Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Akshe,

You are my inspiration. I am delighted to invite you as a chef guest on an opening ceremony of our new theatre. I have been working with ABCD company for many years. Recently, after getting requests from local people for opening a theatre in the neighborhood. They decided to established it, because people have to go to city to practice or take part in shorts plays.

The opening ceremony will be held on 21th August. Since I started watching comic movies, your acting and sense of humor made me biggest fan of you. I always had desire to meet you in person. luckily, I got chance. Entire staff members would be greatful if you will come and do open it. Transport assistance will be provided to you from the airport to theatre, in case you need it.

I believe you would be the best person to open it because you are the most famous actor in current industry, so it would help us to attract more people and encourage them to use theatre. This theatre would be enable people, who are unable to travel to far places, to polish and demonstrate their acting skills.

I hope you would be able to get little time between your busy schedule. I look forward for your prompt response.

Your faithfully,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, information is provided about the new theatre, mentioning its upcoming opening and the context of local demand. Second, a direct invitation is extended to the actor to open the theatre, as seen in 'I am delighted to invite you as a chef guest on an opening ceremony.' Finally, the rationale for why the actor is a suitable choice is explained through their popularity and ability to attract people. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal for a letter to a public figure, although some parts are slightly informal or awkward, such as addressing the actor directly as a chef guest. However, all key content requirements are adequately covered, fulfilling the criteria for a band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear overall arrangement with paragraphs dedicated to separate topics, such as the introduction, the event details, and the justification for the invitation. Paragraphing is generally appropriate, though some paragraphs could be organized more cleanly. Cohesive devices are used, but some transitions feel mechanical or falter, such as the abrupt shift with 'luckily, I got chance' and the fragmented sentence structure in 'Recently, after getting requests from local people for opening a theatre in the neighborhood. They decided to established it...'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance, 'open it' repeated multiple times. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the management of cohesive devices places this response securely at band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items and expressions like 'opening ceremony', 'transport assistance', and 'demonstrate their acting skills'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices throughout the text. For example, the student writes 'chef guest' instead of 'chief guest', 'established' instead of 'establish', and 'shorts plays' instead of 'short plays'. Additionally, phrases like 'biggest fan of you' show minor awkwardness in collocation. While these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, the presence of frequent word-choice and spelling inaccuracies limits the score to a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'in case you need it' and 'who are unable to travel to far places'. However, there are numerous grammatical errors that occur frequently. Examples include missing articles ('to city'), incorrect verb forms ('They decided to established it'), punctuation issues, and awkward phrasing like 'if you will come and do open it'. Furthermore, the sentence fragment 'Recently, after getting requests...' disrupts grammatical flow. Although the meaning can still be understood, the density of structural and grammatical mistakes prevents the response from achieving a higher band, making 5.0 a fair and accurate assessment.
