Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the task. First, information about the new theatre is provided, detailing its magnificent appearance, a spacious ballroom, a seating capacity of about 1,000, modern furniture, high-standard lighting, and a versatile stage. Second, the writer explicitly invites Regina to open the venue by stating, 'I am writing to invite you...' and asking her to cut the ribbon. Third, the response clearly explains why she would be a suitable person, noting that as a movie icon she serves as a role model for upcoming actors. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal invitation to a celebrity. The ideas are adequately developed and relevant throughout, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0, and since all parts are thoroughly covered with clear supporting details, a solid Band 7.0 is awarded.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from the opening invitation and background details about the theatre to the specific role Regina is expected to play at the opening ceremony, and finally a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the invitation, the theatre description, the request for her to cut the ribbon, and the closing remark. Cohesive devices such as 'Unlike the previous theatre' and 'You are the best person for this job' are employed correctly. Although referencing is occasionally slightly loose, such as 'This is invitation' containing a minor grammatical slip, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow. This aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors for clear logical organisation and cohesive usage.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional and topic-specific terms such as 'commissioning', 'magnificent', 'spacious ballroom', 'sitting capacity', 'masterpiece', and 'role model'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'take the industry to the limelight' instead of 'into the limelight', and 'upcoming models' when referring to actors. However, these vocabulary choices do not impede communication, and the writer attempts less common lexical items with general success. The lexical range is adequate and shows flexibility, satisfying the criteria for a Band 6.5, which rounds comfortably to a Band 6.0 based on the presence of word-choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively, as seen in sentences like 'Unlike the previous theatre, this new one is magnificent...' and '...upcoming models who would want to draw inspiration from you.' There are some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward constructions, such as 'This is invitation is to... and to you that we notice...', 'a about 1,000', 'In the aspect of lightning', and 'a dream come through' instead of 'true'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and communication remains clear throughout the letter. The grammatical control reflects a mix of accurate complex forms and recurring errors, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors.
