Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing on behalf of our entertainment company to invite you to open our new theatre, which is due to officially launch next month.

The new theatre is a modern, renowned and well-maintain in the heart of the city. It can accommodate around 500 spectators and is equipped with advanced lighting and sound systems, comfortable seating, spacious dressing rooms and excellent backstage facilities. We intend to use the venue for theatrical performances, live shows and onther culture events.

I would be honoured if you could perform the opening ceremony and officially inaugurate the theatre. I believe you would be an ideal choice because of your remarkable acting career and your longstanding contribution to the entertainment industry. In addition, you have a strong connection with audiences, particularly local residents, and your presence would undoubtedly make this occasion more memorable and attract considerable public and media attention.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 15 October at 6.00 p.m. We sincerely hope that you will be able to accept our invitation and join us for this importance occasion.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Your sincerely,

Hani Prajapati

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. You successfully addressed all three bullet points: providing information about the new theatre in the second paragraph, extending an invitation in the first and third paragraphs, and explaining why the actor would be an ideal person to open the venue due to their career contributions and connection to the community. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is very clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant details, such as the seating capacity, technical facilities, and the scheduled date. Therefore, this performance easily meets the criteria for a high band score in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Each paragraph has a distinct and appropriate focus: purpose and invitation, venue description, rationale for choosing the actor, event logistics, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to connect ideas without being overly mechanical. Paragraphing is handled properly, and referencing throughout the text remains clear. The salutation and sign-off follow standard convention, ensuring smooth navigation through the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary suited for a formal invitation, using precise phrases such as 'officially inaugurate', 'remarkable acting career', and 'public and media attention'. There are a few minor lexical slips, such as writing 'well-maintain' instead of 'well-maintained' and 'onther culture events' instead of 'other cultural events'. Despite these isolated slips, the overall lexical control is strong, and the language successfully conveys nuanced meaning with appropriate style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures alongside accurate simple sentences. Examples include 'I am writing on behalf of our entertainment company to invite you to open our new theatre, which is due to officially launch next month.' The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating strong control over grammar and punctuation. The few slips identified, such as 'well-maintain' in the second paragraph and 'importance occasion' instead of 'important occasion' in the fourth paragraph, are minor and do not impede communication in any way.
