Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear KK,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you about the potential grand opening of the new theater. It is located in downtown Toronto and has the capacity to host around 500 audience members. What makes it more special is that 70% of earnings will be donated to charity every year.

While I have guests and theater artists visiting from all around the world, I would really appreciate it if you could be our chief guest for the ceremony. It is my dream project, and I would love you to be here for the special day.

Although we have various artists making appearances, the audience would love to have an exceptionally talented person like you. I have grown up watching your work and always admired it. Also, having you would attract a great amount of audience, which would be truly beneficial for the charity.

Please let me know once you make the decision. I would love to host you.

Yours sincerely,

LL

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. You provide relevant information about the new theatre by stating its downtown Toronto location, its 500-seat capacity, and its charitable model where 70% of earnings are donated annually. You clearly invite the actor to open the theatre as the chief guest, addressing them as KK. Furthermore, you explain why they are a suitable person, mentioning your admiration for their work, their exceptional talent, and how their presence will attract a large audience to benefit the charity. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal for a professional request. All parts are well-developed and fulfil the communicative purpose effectively, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: paragraph one introduces the theatre, paragraph two extends the invitation, paragraph three explains the reasoning behind choosing the actor, and the final paragraph handles the closing call to action. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'While I have', 'Although we have', and 'Also', which help connect ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is handled well with sufficient and appropriate spacing for a letter format. Referencing and progression are clear, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought easily, making this a solid Band 7 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'potential grand opening', 'chief guest', and 'exceptionally talented' show an ability to use less common items with appropriate style and collocation. Word choices are generally natural, though there are minor areas where vocabulary could be more sophisticated. For instance, 'great amount of audience' is slightly unnatural compared to 'large audience'. However, spelling and word choice are accurate enough not to impede communication, fitting the requirements for a Band 7 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses like 'While I have guests and theater artists visiting...' and 'Although we have various artists making appearances...'. There is a good degree of control over grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences. Minor lapses do not impede communication at all. The control of verb tenses and clause structures is consistent throughout the letter. This demonstrates the control expected at the Band 7 level.
