Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You provide some basic information about the new theatre by mentioning its three buildings dedicated to dance, drama, and music. You also clearly invite Sarah to open the theatre as a chief guest. Furthermore, you explain why she would be a good person for the role, citing your personal friendship, her hard work, and your knowledge of her career. However, the development of these ideas is rather limited and informal in tone, which aligns best with a Band 6.0. To improve further, you should expand on the details of the theatre and provide more formal or persuasive explanations for the invitation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The letter lacks proper paragraphing, as the entire body of the text is written as a single, long, run-on sentence separated only by commas rather than full stops. This makes the overall arrangement overly dependent on a conversational stream of consciousness. While the chronological flow and intention of the letter are understandable, the lack of punctuation and clear cohesive devices results in mechanical and faulty cohesion. Pronoun referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas is abrupt. For a higher band score, you need to break your thoughts into distinct paragraphs and use appropriate cohesive ties and punctuation.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of the words 'theatre', 'busy', and 'know'. You attempt some less common items like 'chief guest', but there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'buildingds', 'cheif', 'beacuse', and 'desrve'. These lexical limitations and errors mean the range is minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor. To achieve a higher score, you should expand your vocabulary range, incorporate more sophisticated paraphrasing, and ensure accurate spelling throughout your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical structure of your response is extremely weak due to the complete absence of full stops and capitalisation after terminal punctuation. The entire response consists of one prolonged run-on sentence joined by comma splices and conjunctions. While you attempt a few complex structures, the frequent punctuation errors and run-on sentences cause significant difficulty for the reader and distort the grammatical boundaries of your sentences. This level of accuracy and control reflects the Band 4.0 descriptors. To improve, you must learn to use proper sentence boundary punctuation, full stops, and capital letters to separate your ideas.
