Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all requirements of the task. You provide clear information about the new theatre, including its layout across three floors with mini theatres and a main auditorium, effectively addressing the first bullet point. You formally invite Mr. James to open the theatre, fulfilling the second requirement. Finally, you clearly explain why he would be an ideal person to open it by mentioning his past guidance when the business started and offering an opportunity to promote his upcoming movie. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a professional letter. All parts of the prompt are fully and adequately addressed without any irrelevant information, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task objectives and audience expectations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from the opening invitation, to the description of the venue, to the justification for choosing the recipient, and finally to the polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct and coherent function. Cohesive devices are handled reasonably well, using transitional phrases such as 'Additionally' and 'Therefore' to link ideas smoothly. Referencing is mostly clear, though some referencing and connective choices could be slightly more sophisticated to reach higher band levels. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and meets all standard letter-writing conventions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate and appropriate for a formal invitation letter, featuring phrases like 'brand new theatre opening', 'formally invite', and 'marketing director'. You successfully attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'accommodate', 'comprise', and 'upcoming movie'. However, there are a few minor collocation and word choice inaccuracies, such as saying a theatre has the 'ability to occupy 300 audience' instead of a 'capacity of 300 audience members' or 'seating for 300'. Despite these minor lexical slips, communication is never impeded, and the range is sufficient for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which is scheduled for') and conditional/reasoning clauses ('When our company started our business your guidance and ideas really helped us...'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and the majority of sentences are grammatically sound. There are occasional punctuation omissions, such as a missing comma after the introductory time clause 'When our company started our business'. However, these minor errors do not interfere with understanding, and control over complex sentence forms remains solid.
