Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. They briefly mention that a new theatre is opening soon in their town on next Monday, invite the actor Karan Aujla to open it, and attempt to explain why he would be suitable by mentioning his talent and positive messaging in songs. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited and simplistic. For instance, the reason why he would be a good person to open the theatre relies on very basic generalisations. While the requirements of the prompt are addressed, the depth of treatment places this response securely at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The letter is organised into distinct paragraphs corresponding to different parts of the prompt, providing some basic structure. However, the overall progression of ideas feels disjointed and awkward. The student attempts to use cohesive devices such as 'Morover', 'In addition to this', and 'Apart from this', but these are often mechanically applied and misspelled. Paragraphing is present, but referencing and logical links between sentences are frequently faulty, leading to a somewhat choppy reading experience that aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and restricted to simple everyday language (e.g., 'famous actor', 'good person', 'happy'). There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'a new theatre open soon' instead of 'opens', and referring to the actor singing a song to give a message rather than his overall artistic impact. Spelling errors are also present, including 'Morover' and 'opporunity'. The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey basic meaning, fitting the Band 5 criteria.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writing relies on a limited range of simple and basic complex sentence structures, many of which contain noticeable grammatical errors. Examples include tense and auxiliary verb errors such as 'a new theatre open soon', 'this a good opporunity', and 'I didnot control my happiness'. Punctuation is also problematic, with incorrect spacing around commas and full stops (e.g., 'well .', 'happiness because i am'). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect typical Band 5 grammatical control.
