Dear........,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Ms Chopra,
My name is Ishika, the manager at Artist Hub Entertainment Company. I am writing this letter to invite you as a chief guest at the opening ceremony of the community theatre in Charsworth on behalf of our city. We are hosting the ceremony on October 5th, 2026, at 10:00 am.
We are opening the theatre to support the local artists who want to pursue their careers in acting. Recently, in colleges and universities, we hosted a drama competition. During the play, we noticed that there is a plethora of potential in students, and they can make a good career in this field. Therefore, we want to encourage them by giving them a platform to show their talents.
It would be an honour to have you as our guest and to cut the opening ribbon with you. It is an undeniable fact that you have built a great career that started from a small theatre play. Additionally, your journey is inspiring many people; thus, we thought it would be worthwhile to invite you as our guest.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Ishika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points of the prompt. You introduce the new community theatre with specific details such as the location in Charsworth and the launch date of October 5th, 2026. You clearly extend an invitation to Ms Chopra to act as the chief guest for the opening ceremony. Furthermore, you provide a clear and logical explanation of why she is an ideal candidate for this role, noting her inspiring journey from small theatre plays to a successful career, which directly connects to the theatre's mission of supporting local artists. Your tone is consistently polite and appropriate for a semi-formal invitation letter. All requirements of the task have been fully addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas, demonstrating strong communicative competence throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-structured and easy to follow. Ideas are logically sequenced across clear paragraphs, starting with the purpose of the letter and details of the event, followed by the background and purpose of the theatre, and concluding with the specific invitation rationale. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct themes. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Therefore', and 'Thus' are employed appropriately to connect ideas, ensuring smooth progression from one sentence to the next. Referencing throughout the text is clear, and the overall flow supports effective communication without causing any confusion for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this general task. Phrases like 'plethora of potential', 'opening ceremony', and 'undeniable fact' add a professional touch to the letter. There are some minor limitations in word choice and collocation—for instance, saying 'invite you as a chief guest' is slightly unnatural compared to 'invite you to be our chief guest', and 'small theatre play' could be better expressed as 'community theatre production' or 'local stage'. However, these vocabulary slips do not impede communication, and your overall lexical control is solid and effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully handle complex clauses, such as in the sentence 'During the play, we noticed that there is a plethora of potential in students, and they can make a good career in this field.' Grammatical control is generally strong with correct tense usage for future arrangements ('We are hosting the ceremony') and past references ('started from a small theatre play'). While there are occasional minor issues, such as tense consistency ('there is' instead of 'there was' when referring back to the recent competition play), the majority of sentences are accurate and punctuation is handled correctly throughout.
