Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. First, information about the new theatre is provided, including its location in the Brentwood area, the number of screens, and additional amenities like a food court and a tennis court. Second, the invitation to open the theatre is clearly stated. Finally, the letter explains why the actor would be a good person for the job, specifically tying it to an upcoming movie release and the opportunity to experience the new sound and screen effects. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal business invitation. The ideas are extended and supported adequately, fulfilling all requirements of the band descriptors for a solid performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that serve distinct functions, such as introducing the purpose, providing details about the venue, making the invitation, and offering a concluding remark. Logical progression is evident as the writer moves smoothly from the announcement of the building project to specific amenities and then to the personal invitation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition to this' and 'Moreover', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional slight awkwardness in paragraph transitions occurs. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the expectations for this band level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'formally invite', 'tentative dates', and 'surround sound system'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'inaurgunate' instead of 'inaugurate', 'upcoming month' instead of 'next month', and 'tenis' instead of 'tennis'. Additionally, phrasing like 'lead hero' could be refined to 'lead role'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are present, they do not impede overall communication, as the reader can easily understand the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional clause 'if you can come and inaugurate our new theatre' and the relative clause 'in which you are a lead hero'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and missing articles, such as 'Currently we are building new cinema hall' (missing articles before 'new' and 'hall'), 'which will be open' instead of 'which will be opened', and 'it will be pleasure' (missing 'a'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur throughout the text, they rarely impede communication, placing the writing comfortably within the range for this band score.
