Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing this letter to invite you to be the guest of honour for the opening of my new theatre.
The theatre is located at the ground floor of city centre because it will be a easy accessible for the public. Moreover, it is a modern theatre with the comfortable seating area with the capacity of almost 300 people. Furthermore, it has been designed with the advance lighting and sound quality.
It would be a great honour if you could attend the opening ceremony. The grand opening is scheduled on 15 October 2026 at 6:00 p.m. At the beginning of the ceremony the ribbon cutting ceremony will take place with the short speech for the guest and then the refreshments will be provided to all the guests.
Since you are a true inspiration to the youngsters and highly respected in the industry, I certainly believe that you will be a great choice. Additionally, your presence will definitely attract media's attention. I would be happy to provide more information if required.
I sincerely hope that you will accept this invitation .
Your's faithfully,
Suman Malhi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly gave information about the new theatre, mentioning its location in the city centre, the 300-seat capacity, and advanced lighting and sound systems. You also explicitly invited Mr. Smith to open the theatre on 15 October 2026, outlining the schedule for the ceremony. Furthermore, you explained why he would be a suitable person by noting that he is an inspiration to youngsters, well-respected in the industry, and capable of attracting media attention. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal throughout, fitting a professional request to a celebrity. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed without irrelevant digressions. Therefore, this performance easily meets the requirements for a higher band descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear and logical organisation. The text is broken down into appropriate paragraphs, with each paragraph having a distinct focus: introduction, theatre details, event schedule, justification for the invitation, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Since' are used to connect your thoughts smoothly, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is handled well, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the flow of information from the initial invitation to the logistical details and concluding remarks. The referencing and progression of ideas are clear throughout the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal invitation letter, successfully using phrases like 'guest of honour', 'opening ceremony', and 'true inspiration'. However, there are several noticeable errors with articles and prepositions, such as writing 'at the ground floor' instead of 'on the ground floor', 'a easy accessible' instead of 'easily accessible', and 'advance lighting' instead of 'advanced lighting'. Additionally, the sign-off contains a minor punctuation and form error ('Your\'s faithfully' instead of 'Yours faithfully'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary items, these recurring inaccuracies in word choice and collocation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and causal clauses like 'Since you are a true inspiration to the youngsters and highly respected in the industry, I certainly believe that you will be a great choice.' You demonstrate good control over basic sentence forms and punctuation. However, there are grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the text, including article misuse ('a easy accessible' instead of 'easily accessible', 'the comfortable seating area' where no article is needed), and incorrect adjective forms ('advance lighting' instead of 'advanced lighting'). These errors do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear, but they occur frequently enough to place the grammar score firmly at band 6.5.
