Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate addresses all three bullet points required in the task instructions. Information about the new theatre is provided, including its capacity and amenities such as a washroom and food area. An explicit invitation is extended to the actor to open the theatre next month, and reasons are given explaining why she or he would be a good person for the job, notably to attract a larger audience and leverage their popularity. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, which places the response securely at Band 6. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Sir' could be improved since the actor's name is unknown, yet the prompt specifically requested addressing the letter to the actor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making the writer's purpose easy to follow. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct points, such as the details of the theatre, the invitation, and the reasoning behind selecting the actor. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic and repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as shifting between pronouns. Furthermore, logical progression between sentences feels mechanical at times rather than fluid. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6, showing adequate control over sequencing and paragraphing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey simple messages clearly. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'amenities', 'special guest', and 'influence people', but these are accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'great honoured' instead of 'great honour' and repeating 'planing' with a single 'n'. Spelling errors like 'amenties' also occur. While communication is never impeded, the vocabulary range remains limited, fitting the Band 5 to Band 6 profile. Because the language successfully communicates the core message despite errors, a Band 6 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples include subordinate clauses like 'if you will be the special guest here' and 'as you are famous for your acting'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'Every theatre room have capacity' (subject-verb agreement), 'Theatre is very spacious' (missing article), and the misuse of tenses and modals, such as 'if you will be'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical mistakes cause some distraction for the reader without completely blocking comprehension, which aligns precisely with the Band 5 descriptors.
