Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Balich,

I am Kaveri, working as a senior manager in a well-known dramatic production company. We are delighted to share some exclusive news with you: we are planning to inaugurate a new theatre in a posh area of Mumbai.

The theatre will be the first recreational amenity in the area. Moreover, it will offer numerous membership options for visitors, and the lucky winner of each month's draw will receive an international holiday voucher for their family.

Our production director wants to invite reputed actors and influencers from around the town. By doing so, youngsters will be motivated to achieve their goals and emulate them, while the venue will gain popularity at the time of the launch. Since you were the lead actor in our latest movie collaboration, we would be honored to invite you to the opening ceremony as our chief guest. You are a rising star of the country, and your charming personality is greatly admired by fans on social media platforms.

I eagerly anticipate a positive response from you on this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Kaveri Pandav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all parts of the task. The letter opens with appropriate details about the new theatre in Mumbai, noting features such as recreational amenities and membership perks, thus fulfilling the requirement to give information about the venue. Furthermore, the invitation is clearly extended to Mr. Balich to act as the chief guest for the opening ceremony. The writer also provides a sound explanation for why he is a suitable candidate, citing his previous collaboration on a movie and his strong fan base among youngsters. The tone is polite, professional, and entirely appropriate for a general correspondence task. All bullet points are fully covered and well-extended, demonstrating a clear understanding of purpose and audience, which aligns well with the expectations of Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised and flows smoothly from an introduction of the company and news, through to the specifics of the theatre, and finally to the invitation and closing remarks. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'By doing so', and 'Since' are used to link ideas, although there is a slight mechanical feel in places, typical of Band 7 writing. Referencing is clear throughout, and the progression of information feels natural for a business-to-individual invitation letter. Overall, the structural framework of the text supports clear communication without causing any confusion for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'dramatic production company', 'inaugurate', 'recreational amenity', and 'chief guest' illustrate an ability to use less common lexical items with an awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are generally appropriate, though there are minor stylistic awkwardnesses, such as 'around the town' instead of 'around town'. However, these minor issues do not impede communication. The vocabulary deployed successfully conveys the professional and courteous tone required for a general training letter, comfortably placing this response in the Band 7 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'Since you were the lead actor in our latest movie collaboration, we would be honored...'). Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with frequent error-free sentences throughout the text. Punctuation and tense control are handled well, and the sentence patterns display flexibility. While it falls short of the wide range and absolute mastery required for higher bands, the control demonstrated here fully satisfies the descriptors for Band 7.0, showing a strong command over standard English grammar.
