Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, some information about the new theatre is provided, noting that it is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by restaurants and cafes, and features splendid architecture. Second, a clear invitation is extended in phrases such as "I am reaching out to invite you cordially". Finally, the response explains why the actor would be a good person to open the theatre, stating that they are a popular and beloved figure in the city. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a public figure, although slightly stiff in places. Overall, the task is fully covered, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. The text is divided into logical paragraphs for the introduction, theatre details, invitation and rationale, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition "Inaddition" is spelled incorrectly and serves as a basic cohesive device, and the sentence structure in the third paragraph ("Categorically discussing that you are a person...") feels somewhat disjointed. Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical progression between sentences occasionally feels abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as "splendid," "undeniable," and "cordially." However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations that detract from precision. For example, "an reknown theater company" contains a grammatical and spelling slip ("a renowned"), "absolutely favourite figure" is unnatural phrasing, and "Inaddition" is a spelling error. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the message, but the choice of words restricts the score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. Examples include "invite you cordially" (awkward word order), "an reknown theater" (incorrect article usage and spelling), and a run-on sentence in the third paragraph: "...growing day by day, it is an undeniable fact that...". Additionally, phrases like "Categorically discussing that you are a person..." lack standard grammatical subject-verb agreement or a clear finite clause structure. These errors occasionally strain the reader, aligning the grammar with a Band 5.5 level.
