Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student gives information about the new theatre by mentioning its name ('The Sigma Theratre'), location (40 Gerrard street East), and capacity. The letter successfully invites Joan to open the venue, specifying the date as the 28th of October and detailing her role at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Furthermore, the writer explains why she is a suitable choice by citing her inspiring journey, blockbuster movies, and down-to-earth personality. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, and the tone is appropriate for a semi-formal or formal business invitation, though some ideas could have been slightly more elaborated to reach a higher band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning and ending. The student uses paragraphing effectively to separate different points, such as details about the theatre, the invitation specifics, and the justification for choosing the actor. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition in phrases like 'It on 28th October' lacks a verb, and referencing is sometimes awkward, as seen in 'I am looking forward from your response'. Paragraphs flow adequately overall, but cohesive devices are underutilised or slightly clumsy in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'blockbuster movies', 'guest of honour', and 'down to earth personality'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and typos, such as 'Theratre' instead of 'theatre', 'opening' instead of 'open', and 'almont' instead of 'almost'. Additionally, phrases like 'give your presence' are somewhat unnatural compared to standard collocations like 'grace us with your presence'. While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies prevent the lexical score from reaching a higher tier.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I would be very thankful if you give your presence on our special day' and 'We heartly believe you are the ideal person for it because of your inspiring journey.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions or verbs (e.g., 'I am a big fan of you' instead of 'of yours', 'It on 28th October' instead of 'It is on'), spelling mistakes ('heartly'), and incorrect preposition use in 'looking forward from your response'. These errors occur regularly across the text, though they do not prevent the overall meaning from being understood.
