Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. First, information about the new theatre is provided, including its location at '240 Clark Avenue' and its capacity for '500 viewers'. Second, a direct invitation is extended for the opening ceremony on '4 November at 4 PM'. Third, an explanation is given as to why this actor is a good choice, noting that they are seen as a 'role model' and that their presence would be a 'dream come true' for young people in the community. The tone is appropriately polite for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear sir,' contains minor inaccuracies in capitalization and specificity given that the prompt targets a female or male actor. Overall, the ideas are relevant, appropriately extended, and fully cover the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization with an introduction, well-developed body paragraphs addressing specific points, and a standard sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different themes, such as the theatre details, the invitation logistics, and the rationale for choosing the actor. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transitional phrases like 'Therefore,' and 'In my area,' helping to link ideas. However, referencing and cohesive links occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and there are some minor cohesive lapses, such as the missing article in 'easily accessible for community' and 'for those kid'. Despite these minor flaws, the overall arrangement is coherent, and progression throughout the letter is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts and specific details related to the theatre opening, such as 'opening ceremony', 'prevoius work commitments', and 'ribbon'. There are a few spelling errors, such as 'prevoius' instead of previous and 'espacially' instead of especially. While the vocabulary is generally suitable for a general task, it tends toward the simpler side, with limited use of less common lexical items or idiomatic phrasing, aside from 'dream come true'. Word choice and collocations are generally clear and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the competent band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditionals and relative clauses such as 'if you can save one hour and come to cut the ribbon, it would be great' and 'the biggest theatre that is going to open'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('accessible for community', 'has not only large stage'), punctuation errors in the salutation and sign-off ('Dear sir,', 'Your sincerely,'), and minor subject-verb agreement or pluralization issues ('those kid'). Despite these frequent minor errors, the sentence structures remain comprehensible, and communication is never impeded. The control over grammar is typical of a competent user.
