Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Holland,
I am writing to invite you to inaugurate the new theatre that my entertainment company is about to launch.
Let me tell you what will be changed in the new theatre. First, there would be ample space to accommodate around 2500 people at once. There will also be a better lighting and sound system, which our previous theatre lacked. Additionally, there would be a great range of refreshments for people so they can enjoy a memorable show.
I am hereby officially inviting you to grace our new theatre with your presence. It would be an immense pleasure to have you as a chief guest. The first show that will be played in our new theatre will be your iconic play for which you received various awards.
I am sure you would be the best person to open the theatre because you have been working in the entertainment industry for more than twenty-five years. The audience that is going to attend the first show considers you a role model.
I hope you will pay attention to my request. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Mike

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt very well. You successfully provided information about the new theatre, such as the capacity of 2500 people and the upgraded lighting and sound systems. You extended a clear invitation to Mr. Holland to act as the chief guest and inaugurated the venue. Furthermore, you explained why he is the ideal person for this role by mentioning his twenty-five years in the entertainment industry and his iconic play. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a professional letter to a public figure. All requirements of the task have been fully addressed with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct function related to the bullet points. Progression of ideas is smooth, moving naturally from the introduction of the theatre to the invitation, and finally to the justification. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to connect sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is handled sufficiently, and referencing throughout the letter remains clear and easy to follow. The overall structure supports the communicative purpose effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business letter. Words and phrases such as 'inaugurate', 'ample space', 'immense pleasure', and 'iconic play' show a good attempt at less common lexical items. While there are a few slightly conversational choices like 'Let me tell you what will be changed', the vocabulary is generally precise enough to convey your message clearly without any hindrance to communication. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('for which you received various awards') and conditional or modal constructions ('so they can enjoy'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, with good control over tense and punctuation. Although a few minor structural patterns could be more varied, grammar does not impede communication at all. Punctuation and capitalization are correctly handled in the formal salutation and sign-off.
