Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I am writing on behalf of Starline Entertainment to invite you to open our new theatre, which will be opening next month.
The theatre is located in the city centre and has a seating capacity of 500 people. It has modern lighting and sound systems, comfortable seating and a small café for visitors. We are planning to host plays, musical shows and other cultural events there.
We would be delighted if you could officially open the theatre at a special ceremony on 15 October at 6 p.m. Your presence would make the occasion very special for everyone involved.
We believe you would be the perfect person to open the theatre because of your successful career and your strong connection with audiences. Many young actors also look up to you. Having you at the opening would inspire them and create a lot of excitement about our new theatre.
I sincerely hope you will accept our invitation. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Minaksi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt. All three bullet points are clearly addressed. First, information about the new theatre is provided, including its location, seating capacity of 500 people, and modern facilities like lighting and sound systems. Second, the invitation is formally extended for 15 October at 6 p.m. Third, logical and persuasive reasons are given as to why Mr. Sharma is an ideal choice, highlighting his successful career, audience connection, and role as an inspiration to younger actors. The tone is appropriately polite, professional, and consistent with a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant throughout, easily meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter follows a clear, logical progression. It starts with an appropriate salutation and a direct statement of purpose, moves through details of the theatre and the specific invitation, and concludes with reasons for choosing the recipient and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme (purpose, venue details, invitation logistics, justification, and closing). Cohesive devices such as 'The theatre', 'We are planning', and 'We believe' are used effectively to link ideas without any mechanical over-use. The referencing throughout the text is clear, and the overall structure is entirely cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is natural and appropriate for a professional semi-formal invitation letter. The candidate demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good control, utilizing terms such as 'seating capacity', 'cultural events', 'officially open', and 'successful career'. While the vocabulary is not overly complex or academic, it is completely adequate and accurate for the task type. There are no spelling errors, and word choice and collocations are used naturally throughout the response. The control over lexical items supports clear and effective communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammar and punctuation. The candidate successfully employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing on behalf of Starline Entertainment to invite you to open our new theatre, which will be opening next month.' and 'We believe you would be the perfect person to open the theatre because of your successful career and your strong connection with audiences.' The vast majority of the sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. Minor stylistic repetitions, such as the frequent use of 'open the theatre', do not undermine the strong grammatical foundation.
