Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Henry,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to invite you for inauguration of a new movie theatre in Toronto.

First of all, our organisation, Cineplex, just completed the construction of a new multiplex theatre in Toronto midtown, the location is close to town centre. It includes six screens with a limited number of recliner seats available in all the rooms, along with an additional childrens play area. There will be a quick food stop in the middle of the buliding for popcorn, food and drinks for people to enjoy during movie.

I would like to invite you to on 6th September for the opening. Moreover, your new movie "The Expendibles" is releasing on the same day and your home town is also Toronto, which makes an ideal opportunity for you to promote the movie. If you agree, we could arrange a permier of the movie with your crew members.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

John Doe

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, it provides clear details about the new theatre, mentioning that it is located in midtown Toronto, includes six screens, recliner seats, and a children's play area. Second, it explicitly invites the actor to the opening on September 6th. Finally, it explains why he would be an ideal guest by noting that his hometown is Toronto and his new movie 'The Expendibles' is releasing on the exact same day, allowing for a mutually beneficial promotion. The tone is appropriate for a business correspondence letter to a famous actor. All parts of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant and extended ideas, fully satisfying the requirements for this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear, logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the second paragraph describes the theatre, the third extends the invitation and provides the rationale, and the final paragraph offers a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'If you agree' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately with standard letter formatting, and referencing is clear throughout, making the overall arrangement coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision. Terms such as 'organisation', 'construction', 'multiplex theatre', and 'permier' demonstrate an adequate lexical resource. There are occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as missing an article in 'for inauguration', a typo in 'buliding', and a spelling error in 'permier' (premiere). However, these minor errors do not impede communication, and the writer successfully attempts less common vocabulary suitable for a professional invitation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable control of grammar. The writer successfully uses conditional structures ('If you agree, we could arrange...') and relative clauses ('which makes an ideal opportunity'). There are some grammatical errors, such as 'invite you for inauguration' instead of 'invite you to the inauguration' and a comma splice in the second sentence of the second paragraph ('midtown, the location is close'). Nonetheless, these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the message.
