Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Humayun,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing on behalf of Starline Entertainment to invite you to the opening ceremony of our newly construct theatre in Lahore next month.

The theatre, situated in the heart of the city, has been designed as a modern venue for both local and international productions. It accommodates 600 guests and features state-of-the-art lightening, sound systems, and comfortable seating arrangements. We are also planning to host drama performances, musical shows, and cultural performances throughout the year.

It would be a tremendous honor if you could perform the opening on 15th October at 6:00 p.m. We would be delighted if you could unveil the commemorative plaque.

I believe you would be the ideal person for this occasion because of your outstanding contribution to the performing arts and your immense popularity with audiences of all ages. Moreover, your presence could generate public interest and make the opening truly memorable.

I genuinely hope you will accept my invitation.

Yours sincerely,

Saim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. Saim provides relevant details about the new theatre, such as its location in Lahore, its 600-guest capacity, and its modern facilities like 'state-of-the-art lightening'. The letter clearly extends an invitation for the opening ceremony on '15th October at 6:00 p.m.' Furthermore, the writer provides a logical and well-developed explanation for why Mr. Humayun is the ideal person for the job, citing his 'outstanding contribution to the performing arts' and immense popularity. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and all parts of the task are fully and clearly addressed without any irrelevant information. Band 8 is fully deserved here.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical progression and structure. Ideas are logically sequenced across well-defined paragraphs, beginning with the purpose of the letter, moving into descriptive details of the venue, then the invitation particulars, and finally the justification for choosing the actor. Cohesive devices are handled naturally and effectively, such as 'Moreover' to introduce an additional supporting point and 'It would be a tremendous honor' to smoothly transition into the invitation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct functional purpose in the correspondence. Overall, the structural flow makes the letter extremely easy to follow and read from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is varied and generally appropriate for a formal business letter. Saim successfully incorporates less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'commemorative plaque', 'state-of-the-art', and 'opening ceremony'. There is a minor spelling slip with the word 'lightening' (which should be 'lighting' in this context), but this does not impede communication. The writer demonstrates a flexible range of vocabulary to describe the venue and convey polite formal intent. The phrasing is natural, accurate, and reflects a strong command of functional workplace English suitable for a Band 7.5 or 8 level, though the minor slip keeps it comfortably at a solid Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

Saim demonstrates a very good control of grammar and punctuation throughout the letter. A wide range of sentence structures is used effectively, including complex sentences such as 'I believe you would be the ideal person for this occasion because of your outstanding contribution...' and 'The theatre, situated in the heart of the city, has been designed as a modern venue...'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and punctuation is handled accurately. There is one minor typographical/form error with 'newly construct theatre' instead of 'newly constructed theatre', but this is an isolated incident. The grammatical control is strong, consistent, and easily meets the criteria for an 8.0.
