Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Malhan,

I hope you are doing well. I wish to bring to your attention a new theatre, and I would love to invite you to this occasion.

I wanted to let you know that my company is opening a new cinema in Surat city, near Mahavir University. It is a perfect place because it has 300 seats. In addition, a cafe and parking are available. Our opening ceremony will start at 5 pm on the ground floor. After traditional rituals, there will be a dance party and cake cutting, including snacks and drinks.

Although, we know you have a busy schedule, it would be great if you could join us as a chief guest to make the event more memorable and energetic. Furthermore, you are a very good person to open the theatre because everyone is a big fan of you. I assure you of your security.

I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Almas successfully covers all the required bullet points of the task. The letter opens by providing information about the new theatre, mentioning that it is a cinema located in Surat near Mahavir University with 300 seats, a cafe, and parking facilities. Furthermore, the invitation is extended clearly to Malhan to act as a chief guest for the opening ceremony starting at 5 pm. Finally, the response explains why Malhan is a suitable choice, noting that everyone is a big fan and that his presence would make the event energetic and memorable. The tone is generally appropriate for a semi-formal invitation to a famous person, though certain expressions like 'dance party and cake cutting' feel slightly casual. Overall, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, meeting the expectations of Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression from introducing the new theatre to extending the invitation and providing justification. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, details of the venue and event, the invitation and reasoning, and the concluding sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with phrases like 'In addition', 'After traditional rituals', and 'Furthermore' helping to guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as 'Although, we know you have a busy schedule', where the punctuation is incorrect and the contrast marker is slightly awkward. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6.5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Almas demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'prompt attention', 'opening ceremony', and 'chief guest' are used appropriately. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary choices and collocations that lack natural precision, such as referring to a theatre opening as a 'dance party and cake cutting' and stating 'everyone is a big fan of you' rather than 'everyone is a huge fan of yours'. While spelling is generally accurate, the lexical range remains somewhat limited and standard, with fewer examples of sophisticated or less common lexical items. These limitations place the performance solidly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Although, we know you have a busy schedule, it would be great if you could join us'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including an unnecessary comma after 'Although', missing articles or awkward phrasing in 'bringing to your attention a new theatre', and prepositional inaccuracies like 'fan of you'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the reader can easily understand the intended message. This balance of mixed structures and manageable errors corresponds directly to a Band 6.0.
