Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Angela,

I am writing this letter to you to extend an invite to the inauguration of the new theatre which is being opened on the 20th of July 2027.

This theatre was created to draw the younger generations to express themselves and their creativity without being judged or mocked. Here, you are welcomed to show your vibrancy and energy without being told you're weird. It was created to bring the world of art and expressions to the forefront. The youths are our main priority and they were the reason for the development of this theatre.

In addition, this is the reason why I will be grateful if you can grace us with your presence on that fateful day being the 20th of July. I am such a huge fan of your work on stage. I have watched all of your stage peformances and the way you enact emotions and scripts is nothing short of breathtaking and I think our kids will appreciate it greatly if you can be present on that day. I believe your are a great role model for them and they will learn from you to always go after their dreams and forget the harsh criticisms and judgements they will eventually face.

I look forward to your reply and will be also be pleased and honored if you can join us. Thank you so much.

Yours Faithfully,

Dumebi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the prompt. You provide details about the new theatre, including its specific opening date and its core mission to support younger generations in expressing their creativity. You also extend a clear invitation to the actor and provide a solid explanation of why she is a suitable choice, highlighting her stage performances and her potential to act as a role model. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-extended, showing a clear purpose and appropriate tone throughout the letter. To reach the highest bands, some of the explanations regarding why she is a good person to open the theatre could be further expanded with even more specific details or tailored examples connecting her career to the theatre's goals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, properly using standard letter conventions like 'Dear Angela' and 'Yours Faithfully, Dumebi'. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' to link your thoughts together, and your paragraphs are separated logically. However, referencing and paragraph transitions are at times slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between the theatre's purpose in the second paragraph and the personal fan details in the third paragraph could flow more naturally. To improve further, you should aim for a more seamless progression of ideas and a wider variety of cohesive markers that do not draw too much attention to themselves.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'inauguration', 'breathtaking', and 'harsh criticisms and judgements'. Your word choice is generally clear and communicates your message effectively without impeding understanding. However, there are a few minor vocabulary and spelling slips present in the text, such as the spelling error 'peformances' instead of 'performances' and minor unnatural collocations like 'extend an invite'. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your use of precise, sophisticated vocabulary and collocation while consistently maintaining accurate spelling and word formation throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, such as in sentences like 'This theatre was created to draw the younger generations to express themselves...' There is good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries overall. However, some minor grammatical inaccuracies occur, such as the slip 'I believe your are a great role model' where a pronoun is misused, and some awkward prepositions or article usages. Your errors are not frequent and rarely impede communication, but they keep your control at this level. To improve, focus on eliminating minor slip-ups in pronouns and ensure rigorous proofreading of your complex structures.
