Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I'm writing this letter on behalf of the entertainment company to invite you to officially open a new theatre, which is scheduled for next month.
The new theatre is located in the heart of the city. It has been designed with modern technologies, upgraded screens, and a sound system. Almost 800 people can enjoy a show at a time. Additionally, the seats are comfortable, and the advanced lighting makes the experience more appealing to the audience.
We would be honoured if you could attend the opening ceremony on Saturday, 15 November and officially inaugurate the theatre. Your presence will make this special event more memorable.
I believe you are the ideal person for this event. As you have contributed for almost 28 years in the entertainment industry, and you have invested a major amount of your income in the education of needy children. Your contribution to our society is remarkable and cannot be ignored.
I sincerely hope you accept my invitation, and I look forward to hearing from you
Yours sincerely,
Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. It provides clear information about the new theatre, such as its location, capacity, and modern amenities like upgraded screens and advanced lighting. The invitation for the opening ceremony on Saturday, 15 November, is stated clearly, and the rationale for choosing Mr. Sharma is well-supported by mentioning his long career in the entertainment industry and his philanthropic work. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To move higher, the ideas could be extended with even greater depth or contextual detail regarding the nature of the opening event, ensuring every point feels fully explored without any slight generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and theatre details to the invitation and the justification for selecting the recipient. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Additionally' to add details about the venue. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate ideas. To achieve an even higher band, referencing could be managed with absolute precision, and cohesive links could feel a bit more varied and natural, avoiding any minor mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing appropriate terms such as 'entertainment company', 'inaugurate', and 'philanthropic contribution'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, as seen in 'heart of the city' and 'special event'. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses in word choice, such as 'contributed for almost 28 years' instead of 'worked in', but these do not impede communication. To reach a higher level, the vocabulary would need to feature more sophisticated uncommon lexical choices used with consistent natural control and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures like relative clauses ('which is scheduled for next month') and modal verbs. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few persistent errors, such as the incomplete grammatical structure in 'and you have invested a major amount' which creates a fragment, and a missing preposition or awkward phrasing in 'contributed for almost 28 years'. Punctuation is generally sound, though the closing sentence lacks a final full stop. To attain the next band, the response would need a wider variety of complex structures deployed with a greater proportion of error-free sentences.
