Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering information about the new theatre, extending an invitation to the actor, and explaining why she or he would be a suitable person for the opening. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While the location and date of the cinema hall are clearly provided, the explanation of why the actor is a good choice relies on somewhat general statements, such as having 'all the qualities which a great actor needs to have,' which lacks specific detail. Nevertheless, the purpose of the letter is clear, and an appropriate semi-formal tone is maintained throughout the writing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving logically from the announcement of the opening to the invitation and the justification. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, and simple cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'secondly,' 'Moreover,' and 'Therefore' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel mechanical rather than fluid, and occasional awkward transitions mean the progression of ideas is not always entirely seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message despite noticeable limitations. The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'inspiring' and 'celebrities,' but also exhibits a range of spelling and word choice errors, such as 'chiff guest' for chief guest, 'cinima' for cinema, and 'journery' for journey. These errors and misspellings indicate a limited lexical range, though they do not completely impede communication for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like relative clauses and conditional expressions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as tense and verb form inconsistencies in phrases like 'since you start your journery... and now you are become,' as well as missing prepositions in 'invite you for open.' Despite these errors, the grammatical structures used do not severely impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences generally remains clear.
