Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Amitabh Bachchan,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to invite you for an inaugration of the new theatre.
I am Shraddha Kapadia and I am working for TVS entertainment as an assistant director. Well, we are planing to open a new theatre in Surat. This theatre has 10 screens with a dolbi sound system as well as a gaming zone and some famous clothing and fastfood outlets. To elaborate, it is a three story building. On the ground floor, there are clothing outlets, cafes and children play area, second floor has 10 movie screens along with refreshments and on the top floor, it has a huge recreational centre with bowling alleys.
I am inviting you to cut the ribbon for the theatre as you are a famous actor and everyone admires you.
To be honest, you would be a good person to open the theatre because people of all ages are a huge fan of yours and locals would be happy to see you in person rather than just on big screens.
I am eagerly waiting for your response.
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Shraddha Kapadia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a letter to a celebrity. You clearly cover all the bullet points by providing specific information about the new entertainment venue in Surat, extending a direct invitation to open it, and explaining your rationale for choosing him. Your position is clear throughout. While the description of the building layout is functional, some ideas, such as the specific floor-by-floor breakdown, could have been linked more purposefully to the invitation itself to fully demonstrate the higher band characteristics of fully extended and supported ideas. Overall, the purpose of the letter is conveyed effectively and meets all functional requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. You begin with an appropriate salutation, state your purpose, elaborate on the venue details, and conclude with the invitation and formal sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, moving from the venue introduction to the personal invitation. Cohesive devices such as 'To elaborate' and 'To be honest' are employed, although referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, which prevents the writing from achieving a smoother, more flexible flow. Pronoun referencing is generally clear, helping the reader follow the progression of thoughts from the venue features to the personal appeal.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary choice is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message with a sufficient range of everyday words and some less common items like 'recreational centre' and 'bowling alleys'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'inaugration' instead of 'inauguration' and 'dolbi' instead of 'Dolby', alongside minor collocation slips like 'children play area' instead of 'children's play area'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a typical limitation at this level where attempts at precise spelling and styling occasionally fall short. Expanding your control over precise phrasing would help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as 'I am writing this letter to invite you...' and 'locals would be happy to see you in person rather than just on big screens.' There is a good control of verb tenses and basic punctuation overall. However, some minor grammatical errors persist, such as articles and prepositions in phrases like 'for an inaugration' instead of 'for the inauguration' or missing possessives like 'three story building' instead of 'three-storey building'. These errors do not impede communication, but the occasional presence of structural slips keeps the writing firmly within a mixed error-free and error-prone territory rather than achieving consistent complexity.
