Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to invite you to open a new theatre in our entertainment company soon. I also want to give you some information about the new theatre.
Our new theatre also needs a new projector to make it more enjoyable while watching. You are a famous actor and I have also watched your movies since my childhood. I enjoyed each of your movies. You are my idol and I really want to invite you to open the new theatre in our entertainment company.
The reason why i am inviting you to open the new theatre is that i asked many people which actor should i choose and they said "Salman Khan." They advised me to choose you because they told me that you are very good at giving ideas. They persuaded me that no one will do this better than Salman Khan.
I hope that you would accept my invitation and look forward to my reply.
Regards,
X-Y-Z

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses all parts of the task minimally, but the ideas are limited and under-developed. While you mention that you work for an entertainment company opening a new theatre and attempt to invite Salman Khan, the information provided about the theatre itself is vague and superficial, limited to mentioning that it needs a new projector. Furthermore, the explanation of why he would be a good person to open the theatre relies heavily on personal fandom ('I have also watched your movies since my childhood') rather than professional suitability, and the justification that others advised you because he is 'good at giving ideas' is somewhat unclear. To move up, you need to expand your ideas fully and provide more logical, relevant details about the theatre and the reasons for the invitation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation in the letter, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The relationship between sentences and paragraphs can feel disjointed; for instance, the second paragraph abruptly shifts from the projector to your childhood memories of watching his movies, and then back to the invitation. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and mechanically, such as starting multiple sentences with 'You are' or 'I also want'. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping ideas logically—such as keeping all information about the theatre together and separating it from the reasons for the invitation—would greatly improve the flow of the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for this task, relying on simple, everyday words and repeating terms such as 'new theatre', 'movies', and 'open'. There are some noticeable vocabulary choices and word forms that affect precision, such as writing 'look forward to my reply' instead of 'look forward to your reply'. While your spelling and word choices do not completely impede communication, they remain basic and repetitive. To achieve a higher score, you should try to incorporate a wider and more flexible range of less common lexical items and precise collocations suited to a formal or semi-formal invitation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple and straightforward compound sentences. When you attempt more complex formulations, such as noun clauses ('The reason why i am inviting you...'), your control fluctuates, and there are frequent basic errors involving pronouns, capitalization ('i'), and prepositions. While these errors rarely impede communication entirely, they are noticeable and persistent throughout the text. To improve your grammatical score, you should aim to increase your control over a wider variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring greater accuracy in punctuation and capitalization.
