Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Mathew,

I hope you are doing great. My name is Zubair, I am writing this letter to invite you to the opening ceremony of our new theatre. I work as a manager in Chili Entertainment.

Our new theatre is ready to open in the City center of Lahore. It is just adjacent to Mojo cinema on Hall road. The sole purpose of this theatre would be to promote classic arts through live performances. Moreover, its architecture is designed by Mr Umair.

Our whole team is excited to invite you to its opening on 6th of February, 2027 at 9PM. Therefore, we are hopeful that you will come to join our celebration. Moreover, you are very famous in public, and people would love to see you around them. In addition, you are a senior actor and we all know that you are very much interested in theatres. So, you are the perfect candidate for this coming opening.

I hope that you will consider my request.

Yours faithfully,

Zubair.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully address all parts of the prompt, establishing a clear purpose right from the beginning. You provide relevant information about the new theatre, such as its location 'in the City center of Lahore' and its purpose 'to promote classic arts'. You also clearly invite Mr Mathew and provide reasons why he would be an ideal choice, mentioning that he is a senior actor and interested in theatres. All bullet points are covered appropriately. However, some ideas show a tendency toward over-generalization rather than deep elaboration, such as stating 'people would love to see you around them' without further context. To reach a higher level, you could expand more fully on the specific highlights of the opening event or the architectural significance of the venue to provide richer details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. You use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately, dedicating separate paragraphs to the theatre's location and purpose, the invitation details, and your closing remarks. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In addition', which guide the reader smoothly through the letter. However, the use of cohesive devices is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as starting consecutive sentences with 'Moreover'. For a higher band, you would need to employ a wider and more flexible variety of referencing and transitional expressions without relying heavily on standard additive connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'opening ceremony', 'sole purpose', and 'perfect candidate'. Your word choice is generally clear and communicates your message effectively, though there are minor inaccuracies in collocation and style, such as 'very famous in public' instead of a more natural collocation like 'a public figure' or 'widely known'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical items and idiomatic phrases with greater precision regarding style and natural collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You show a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a good attempt at controlling your grammar. Structures such as 'I am writing this letter to invite you...' and 'we all know that you are very much interested...' are handled well. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as capitalizing 'City center' incorrectly and using lowercase for proper noun elements, but these rarely impede communication. You also successfully employ future time forms for the event date. To move further up the scale, you need to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures consistently with a higher frequency of error-free sentences.
