Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madhuri,

I hope this letter finds you well and in a good health.

I am writing this letter to give you an invitation to inaugerate a new theatre that we have built in Calgary, Alberta. I work for an entertainment company and the theatre will be opened shortly, perhaps in the 4th week of the coming month.

The construction of the theatre was made possible by not only our companies but communities effort also. It is located just on the bank of an amazing Peace River with the total capacity of 50,000 seats. It is fully equipped with modern audio and video experience with a massive projector screen. We have plenty of shops inside the theatre to entertain the crowd with all type of activities including a game zone for children.

We have a whole schedule targetting different genre of art. Be it music, painting, artistry and more. Specifically the traditional dance and classical music genre where the complete 10 days of the month have been alloted. We hope to attract a huge crowd in the coming month, considering your execellence in traditional dance and music, you make a great fit for our opening ceremony. Your presence would mean a lot to the youth and inspiring in its entirerity.

The whole management team and everyone is very excited about you being present at this event. We would be handling everything prior and post your arrival.

Thank you for your consideration and we cannot wait for this event to be the best in your presence.

Sincerely,

XYS

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a strong score for task achievement. The writer clearly addresses the reader, provides specific information about the new theatre in Calgary, extends a warm invitation to open it, and effectively explains why Madhuri is a suitable person for the role due to her expertise in traditional dance and classical music. The position and tone are appropriate for a formal letter to a public figure. While most ideas are well-extended and supported—such as the description of the riverbank location and the scheduled artistic genres—some details regarding the broader entertainment offerings are slightly general, which keeps the response at this solid level rather than fully pushing into higher band territory.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The overall arrangement is coherent, starting with pleasantries and the purpose of the letter, moving through the details of the theatre and the invitation, and concluding with closing remarks. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to group related ideas, such as grouping the theatre features in the second paragraph and the scheduling rationale in the third. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transitions like 'Specifically' and 'considering your excellence'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or slightly abrupt, as seen in the transition between paragraphs four and five, which prevents the essay from reaching the highest levels of smooth, unobtrusive cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the message with sufficient flexibility. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'inaugurate', 'allotted', and 'expertise', though there are some noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that reflect this band level. Words like 'inaugerate' (misspelled), 'companies' instead of 'company's', 'targetting' (double 't'), and 'execellence' (misspelled) detract from lexical precision. Furthermore, collocations like 'in a good health' instead of 'in good health' and 'all type of activities' instead of 'all types of activities' show that while the writer has enough vocabulary to complete the task, word choice and spelling errors require occasional re-reading by the audience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct varied clauses using structures such as relative clauses and conditional-like framing. There are some good grammatical patterns employed, but errors in grammar and punctuation persist throughout the text. Examples include prepositional and article issues such as 'on the bank of an amazing Peace River' (should be 'the Peace River'), subject-verb agreement issues like 'companies but communities effort also', and slight structural awkwardness in phrases like 'inspiring in its entirerity'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures remain generally understandable while keeping the response firmly within this grammatical band.
