Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ms. Mahira Khan,

I am writing to you from City Lights Entertainment Company. We are opening a new theatre in Lahore and I am very excited to invite you to this special event.

Our theatre is called City Lights Theatre. It is in Gulberg, Lahore. It is very modern and big, with 400 comfortable seats, a large screen and the best sound system. Our aim is to promote Pakistani drama and films and give a platform to new artists.

We would be very happy if you could officially open our theatre. The grand opening is 15th November at 7 PM. It would be a great pleasure for us if you could cut the ribbon and say a few words.

We want you to open it because you are the most loved and respected actresses in Pakistan. Everyone admires your work.

I hope you will accept our invitation.

Yours sincerely,

Ahmed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the letter-writing task. You provide clear information about the new venue, including its location in Gulberg, Lahore, its seating capacity, and its primary aim to promote Pakistani drama. The invitation is clearly extended for the grand opening on the 15th of November, and you explain why the recipient is an ideal choice due to her popularity and respect across the country. While all bullet points are covered adequately, some ideas like the theatre's facilities and the reason for choosing her could be slightly more extended and supported to reach the highest levels of task fulfillment, showing clear elements of fully developed ideas while retaining a largely standard format appropriate for the semi-formal tone required.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You have managed paragraphs effectively, separating the introduction, the details of the theatre, the invitation itself, the justification for choosing the actor, and the closing remarks into distinct sections. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next, such as transitional phrases and referencing pronouns like 'Our theatre' and 'It is in Gulberg'. While paragraphing and referencing are well managed, applying a slightly wider variety of cohesive devices would push this criterion further. The overall progression of information remains clear and easy to follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message with sufficient flexibility. You make some attempts at less common phrasing, such as 'officially open', 'grand opening', and 'promote Pakistani drama and films'. However, there is a minor grammatical slip in word form under this domain where you wrote 'one of the most loved and respected actresses' missing the plural noun agreement or phrase accuracy ('one of the most loved and respected actresses'). Spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication, though incorporating a richer variety of sophisticated synonyms would help elevate your lexical range to the next band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with many error-free sentences throughout the letter. Good control is shown over basic punctuation and verb tenses, such as the present simple in 'We are opening a new theatre' and the future/modal forms in 'It would be a great pleasure'. However, a few minor inaccuracies persist, such as the missing plural agreement in 'one of the most loved and respected actresses' where 'actresses' should match the plural structure required after 'one of the'. These minor errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of grammar while retaining room for a wider variety of complex sentence structures.
