Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Rainey,

I am writing this letter to invite you as a special guest in the opening of the "Miraj" theatre.

Next Thursday, there will be a grand opening of the theatre situated in Andheri East, Mumbai nearby Sun city mall. This is a multiplex cinema, which has 10 different screens that can play distinct movies ranging from 3-D to IMAX. Furthermore, all of them supports Dolby Atmos audio, which provides the immense sound clarity to viewers. We have organised an event starting with a dance performance and then followed by ribbon cutting ceremony. I would like to invite you to perform the ribbon cutting ceremony because your movie will be released on this theatre next Friday.

As you are a globally known actor who worked in diversed hit films, you are a perfect fit to perform this ceremony. In addition, your popularity will attract a lot of your fans, which is beneficial for the theatre's profit and popularity.

Please let me know your availability at your earliest convenience.

Kind Regards,

Craig

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in a well-structured formal letter, earning a strong score for task achievement. You provided relevant details about the new 'Miraj' theatre, including its location, screen count, and sound system. Furthermore, you clearly extended your ideas regarding why the actor would be an ideal choice to open the venue, linking it logically to the upcoming release of their movie and their ability to attract fans. Although your explanation about the event schedule and the ticket or profit benefits are slightly generalised rather than fully elaborated, your main position is clear throughout, and all bullet points are addressed thoroughly. To reach the highest bands, you could deepen your elaboration by adding more specific promotional context regarding the event.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression from beginning to end. You utilised appropriate paragraphing, separating the introduction, the theatre description, the reasoning behind the invitation, and the closing remarks into distinct, logical blocks. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'As you are a globally known actor' are used effectively to connect your ideas, although referencing and linking show occasional mechanical patterns characteristic of this band level. The flow remains steady, allowing the reader to follow your message without confusion. To progress further, you could vary your transitional phrases to make the transitions feel even more natural and seamlessly integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as 'multiplex cinema', 'immense sound clarity', and 'earliest convenience'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score, such as writing 'released on this theatre' instead of 'released in this theatre', and using 'diversed' instead of 'diverse'. Spelling and word-choice errors are minor and do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, you need to refine your precision with collocations and use less common lexical items with greater stylistic control and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your letter exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard grammatical patterns. You effectively deployed relative clauses and conditional ideas, such as 'which has 10 different screens that can play distinct movies'. However, there are some grammatical errors, notably subject-verb agreement issues like 'all of them supports' instead of 'support', alongside minor prepositional slips. These errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning. To push into higher bands, you should aim to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure rigorous self-checking of basic grammatical concord.
