Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smith,

I am writing on behalf of our prestigious Elana entertainment company which is planning to open a new theatre soon. I am formally sending you an invitation to inaugurate our new theatre.

Our entertainement company has been thriving since 2010. We already owned multiple theatres in different cities which encourgaed us to open a new theatre in Lahore. This theatre would be special in terms of their role plays, costume designs, seating capacity as well as imported sound system. Moreover, we designed the new theatre by internationally recognized infrastructure experts.

We consider you the most talented and versatile personality who served the theatre for a long time. You genuinly took the theatre culture to new heights by showcasing your extraordinary and clinical performances. Hence, we would really be happy if you join us on inauguration ceremony and open the new theatre.

Our entertainement company would be waiting for your approved response.

Yours Sincerely,

Akif Mazhar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the prompt by providing information about the new theatre, formally inviting the actor, and explaining why she or he is a suitable person for the opening. Your purpose is clear from the beginning. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, while you mention features like costume designs and an imported sound system, these points are listed rather than fully elaborated. Similarly, the explanation of why the actor is a good choice is stated generally rather than extended with specific examples of their career milestones. To reach a higher band, you should expand further on these bullet points with more specific supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You divide the response into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct topic, such as company background, theatre features, and the invitation itself. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the use of transitional phrases like 'Moreover' and 'Hence', which feel a bit rigid. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, for example, using 'their role plays' instead of referring clearly back to the theatre's productions. To improve cohesiveness further, you could use a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices to link your sentences and ideas more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional and business-appropriate terms like 'prestigious', 'inaugurate', and 'versatile personality'. You also attempt some less common lexical items, although this is accompanied by some inaccuracies in spelling and word choice that do not impede communication. For example, there is a spelling slip in 'entertainement' and an awkward collocation in 'approved response' rather than 'confirmation' or 'reply'. You also refer to 'role plays' when you mean 'stage plays' or 'performances'. To achieve a higher lexical band, you should aim for greater precision in word choice and completely eliminate spelling errors while incorporating more sophisticated collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as 'I am writing on behalf of...' and 'We consider you the most talented...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. For instance, there is a tense inconsistency when you write 'We already owned multiple theatres', where the simple past 'owned' clashes slightly with the ongoing context of a thriving business, and an article issue with 'on inauguration ceremony' instead of 'on the inauguration ceremony'. You also make a pluralisation error in 'terms of their role plays' when referring back to a singular theatre. To move to a higher band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy with prepositions and articles.
