Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Harry,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing to you regarding the inauguration of a new drama theatre at our agency, and would like to humbly request your presence on that date.

It is going to be a one-of-a-kind theatre, with everything designed with extreme precision. The main stage is spacious, with immense attention given to the lighting. The floor is built using a multi-layer system, ensuring not only the safety of performers, but also structural strength, as well as providing sound dampening. It would house around 5000 spectators, with additional VIP sections. The architecture is awe-inspiring and the concept is taken from the era of Greeks, making it look extremely artistic at first glance.

We as a team, would be ecstatic if you would take some time out of your hectic schedule, and give us the pleasure of your presence at the Grand opening of our theatre.

Apart from the fact that you are an outstanding actor, I would like to add that there would not be a better option than you are. Firstly, because of the years you have dedicated to this industry, and secondly, your devotion towards encouraging young artists.

Looking forward to see you cut that red ribbon!

yours faithfully,

tehreem

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requirements: you describe the theatre’s stage, sound-dampening floor, capacity and Greek-inspired design; invite Harry to attend its opening; and explain his suitability through his acting career and support for young artists. These details make the letter relevant and give the invitation a clear purpose. The reasons for choosing him are persuasive but brief, and the link between his qualities and the theatre’s aims could be developed further—for example, explain how his encouragement of young performers reflects the company’s plans. The opening date and practical details are also absent, so the invitation remains somewhat general. Overall, the task is clearly addressed, with room to extend a few ideas more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: purpose, theatre description, invitation, reasons for selecting the actor, and a closing remark. Paragraphing supports this structure, and phrases such as “Firstly” and “secondly” make the two reasons easy to follow. The sequence is logical throughout, although some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly in the final explanatory paragraph. The transition from the detailed theatre description to the invitation could also be smoother, perhaps by connecting the venue’s artistic concept to the event you hope the actor will inaugurate. The closing line is engaging, but the sign-off could be more consistently matched to the direct, personal tone of the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a good range of vocabulary for describing the venue and making a formal invitation, including “one-of-a-kind,” “structural strength,” “awe-inspiring,” and “devotion.” These choices add detail and show some flexibility in register. A few expressions are less natural or precise: “at our agency” is vague for an entertainment company, “there would not be a better option than you are” is awkward, and “take some time out of your hectic schedule” sounds somewhat formulaic. “Extreme precision” and “immense attention” also intensify the description without adding much specific information. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording, such as describing the theatre as “designed with meticulous attention to detail” and calling the actor an “ideal choice.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a range of sentence forms, including the complex description of the floor and the reason-giving structure beginning “Firstly.” Many sentences are controlled and easy to understand. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “We as a team, would be ecstatic,” the comma after “team” is unnecessary; in “there would not be a better option than you are,” the comparison should be structured differently, such as “there would be no better choice than you.” The closing phrase “Looking forward to see you” needs the gerund form “seeing.” The sign-off “yours faithfully” should also begin with a capital letter. These are local errors rather than obstacles to understanding; careful proofreading of verb patterns and punctuation would improve accuracy.
