Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Mr. jot,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing a letter to you on behalf of horizon entertainment industry invited to you on the opening of new theatre. This theatre is located on the 10 highway on Surrey,BC near gas station This is very big theatre and environment is also good.

I discussed with our manager invited to you during the opening of new theatre which will be on 13 November. I am very happy if you will come and cut the opening ribbon. There are some other guests are also attended this opening like friends as well as collegues.

I think you are the good person to open the theatre because you have some good qualities like down to earth, always prefer to meet new culture persons as well as good confidence level.

I appreciated to you if you come for a short period of time. I know you are busy in your work but you can manage only one hour for this opening theatre program.

Yours Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three required points: you describe the theatre’s location and size, invite the actor to cut the ribbon on 13 November, and give reasons such as being “down to earth” and welcoming people from different cultures. These details make the purpose clear. However, the information about the venue is brief, and the reasons for choosing this actor are asserted rather than developed; for example, explain how the actor’s reputation or career connects with the theatre or its audience. The invitation is also not fully clear in the opening sentence, where the wording about inviting the actor is difficult to follow. Develop the venue and personal reasons more specifically, and state the invitation directly and confidently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening explains its purpose, the next paragraphs give venue and event details, and the final paragraph makes a request. This paragraphing helps the reader follow the main points. Some connections are less smooth, however. The first paragraph moves quickly from the company to the location and description, while “I discussed with our manager invited to you” makes the relationship between the discussion and invitation unclear. The sentence about other guests also feels loosely attached to the invitation. Use clearer links between ideas and make references explicit—for instance, explain who will attend and how the actor’s presence would contribute to the event. A more conventional closing would also help the letter feel complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to a formal invitation, including “opening ribbon,” “guests,” and “qualities,” and the reader can generally understand the intended message. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, such as “opening of new theatre,” “good confidence level,” and “opening theatre program.” “Environment is also good” is vague for describing a venue, and “new culture persons” does not clearly express the intended idea. Choose more precise phrases for the theatre’s facilities, the actor’s qualities, and the event. Also check spelling and capitalization, including “colleagues,” “Horizon,” and the actor’s name, to make the letter more polished and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes mostly short, direct statements and attempts some longer structures, such as “I think you are the good person to open the theatre because…”. However, the longer sentences are often difficult to control. For example, “I am writing a letter to you on behalf of horizon entertainment industry invited to you” combines clauses without a correct verb structure, and “There are some other guests are also attended” has an incorrect construction and tense. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “on the 10 highway on Surrey” and “the opening of new theatre.” Use a wider mix of accurate sentence patterns, and check that each clause has a clear subject and correctly formed verb. These corrections would make the invitation easier to read.
