Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to invite you on the opening ceremony of our new entertainment theatre. It would be delightful to have you here.
Our company have three theatre locations in our city but our management decided to add one more in Chandigarh. The opening ceremony will be held on 9 November at 11 am at our new location.
It would be great if you will be present on the opening day. I understand you have very busy schedule but its our dream to have you here on this big achievement for our company.
I believe you are the good person to open the theatre for several reasons. Firstly, you are very down to earth person and motivate many young people to get success in their lives. Additionally, you are living in Chandigarh, it will be easy for you to attend our occassion. It is my childhood dream to meet you in person.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter covers all three required points: it gives the theatre’s location and opening time, makes a clear invitation, and explains why the actor is suitable. The reasons—being an inspiration to young people and living in Chandigarh—are relevant, and the personal wish to meet the actor adds warmth. The details about the company’s existing venues also help establish context. However, some points are less fully developed: the description of the new theatre is limited, and the reasons for choosing this particular actor could be linked more directly to their career or public profile. The invitation is clear, but adding a request to confirm attendance would make the purpose more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the purpose of writing comes first, followed by details of the venue and date, the invitation, and the reasons for selecting the actor. Paragraphing supports this progression, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Additionally” help organise the supporting reasons. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. At times, however, the links between ideas feel somewhat mechanical, and the final reason shifts from the actor’s suitability to the writer’s personal dream. A smoother connection between the actor’s influence, their local connection, and the invitation would strengthen the progression. The reference to “you” remains clear throughout, though a more polished transition into the request for a reply would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for a formal invitation and communicates the main message clearly. Phrases such as “opening ceremony,” “management,” “childhood dream,” and “time and consideration” show some range beyond basic wording. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural choices that limit flexibility and polish. “Invite you on the opening ceremony” does not use the natural collocation for an invitation, while “big achievement” is rather general and “good person” is vague in this context. “Occassion” is also misspelled. Aim for more precise language about the actor’s suitability and the theatre’s significance, and check spelling and collocations carefully; these changes would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “I understand you have very busy schedule but…” and “I believe you are the good person to open the theatre for several reasons.” Meaning remains clear, and the errors do not generally obstruct communication. Some grammatical inaccuracies are present, however: “Our company have” has a subject–verb agreement error, “if you will be present” uses an unsuitable verb form after “if,” and articles are missing or incorrect in “you have very busy schedule” and “you are the good person.” The sentence beginning “I understand” also needs clearer punctuation between its contrasting ideas. More consistent control of agreement, articles, and conditional forms, alongside varied sentence patterns, would improve accuracy.
