Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
The purpose of my writing today is to invite you, on behalf of Bright Entertainment Company, to open a new cinema, which will be launched in downtown Toronto next week.
Our new theatre has a lot of modern facilities for its viewers, such as comfortable seats and a waiting area where people can wait before the movie. Besides this, we also made a mini game zone for children where kids can play some video games for their entertainment.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 15th October at 6.15 p.m. We would be highly honoured to have you as our host for that ceremony to open our new theatre. We would also appreciate it if you could say some words regarding the importance of theatre to the local community.
I believe that you would be the perfect person for this special occasion because you have enough experience in the film industry, and you also contribute a lot to the entertainment industry. I think your presence would encourage a lot of viewers, especially the youngsters, to visit our new theatre.
Thank you so much for your consideration in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Kevin Gohil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requirements: you describe the theatre’s facilities, invite the actor to the opening, and explain why their presence would be suitable. Details such as the comfortable seats, children’s game zone, and the ceremony time make the invitation relevant. Your reason that the actor’s experience and influence could encourage young people is also clear. However, some points are less fully developed: the theatre is described mainly through basic facilities, and the actor’s suitability is expressed in general terms rather than linked to a specific achievement or connection with the community. The request to speak about theatre’s importance adds a useful detail. To strengthen the letter further, include one distinctive feature of the venue and a more specific reason for choosing this actor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the invitation, describes the venue, gives the event details, and then explains the actor’s suitability. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking phrases such as “Besides this” and “because” make relationships between ideas clear. The closing is also appropriate for a formal invitation. Some cohesion is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “also” and the sequence of sentences beginning with “I.” The opening paragraph could connect the company’s purpose and the event more smoothly, while the final reason could be integrated with a more specific example. Varying transitions and using clearer references to the actor and the ceremony would make the progression feel more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a formal invitation and communicates the main information clearly. Phrases such as “opening ceremony,” “highly honoured,” and “local community” suit the context, while the facilities are described in accessible terms. There are, however, some imprecise or less natural choices and repetitions. “Host” may suggest presenting the event rather than formally opening the venue, and “a lot of modern facilities” is broad and informal. “Say some words regarding” is understandable but not idiomatic in this context. The repeated use of “new theatre” and “entertainment” also limits variety. Aim for more precise collocations and a slightly wider range of formal expressions, while keeping the tone warm and direct.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and many sentences are accurate and easy to understand. For example, “I believe that you would be the perfect person for this special occasion because…” combines a clear main clause with a reason clause, and the conditional phrasing in “We would also appreciate it if you could…” is well controlled. There are a few grammatical and punctuation details to refine. In “a waiting area where people can wait,” the relative clause is correct but repetitive in structure; more importantly, the comma before “and you also contribute” joins two independent clauses and would be clearer as a semicolon or a separate sentence. The date and time could also be punctuated consistently. Continue using complex structures, while checking clause boundaries and punctuation.
