Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am Zara Shiakh and working as an event organiser in an entertainment company entitled 'The Luxe Entertainment'. My company is planing to open a new theatre in the heart of the city that is 'Town Square'. This theatre will be quite different from others as we are going to offer a number of services including backstage makeup rooms, restrooms for performers and separate rehersal rooms. Moreover, we will introduce a food court and kioske offering fashion accessories.

On behalf of my company, I would like to invite you for the opening ceremony of our theatre as a 'Chief Guest'. It would be honor for my company that you do the honors. The ceremony going to be held on 18th October, 2026, in the evening.

I believe you would be a good person to open the theatre, since you have started your acting journey as a theatre artist and your contribution towards theatre community. Furthermore, you have worked in a number of theatre plays which has lasting impacts on our society. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance.

Yours sincerely,

Zara Shaikh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements clearly: you describe the theatre and its facilities, invite John to be chief guest at the opening, and explain his connection to theatre. The details about rehearsal rooms and the ceremony date make the invitation specific, while his background as a theatre artist gives a relevant reason for choosing him. The explanation of his suitability is somewhat general, however: the reference to his plays having an impact on society would be stronger with a specific example or a clearer link to the new venue’s aims. Overall, the purpose and tone are clear, and the main ideas are extended sufficiently, though one supporting point could be developed further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression from introducing yourself and the theatre, to making the invitation, and then explaining why John is suitable. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “Moreover,” “On behalf of my company,” and “Furthermore” guide the reader through the information. The closing is also appropriate for a formal invitation. Some linking is a little formulaic, and the final paragraph combines two reasons without fully developing their relationship. To strengthen the flow further, group the theatre details more tightly and connect the actor’s experience directly to the significance of opening this particular theatre.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range for a formal invitation, including relevant expressions such as “opening ceremony,” “Chief Guest,” “contribution towards theatre community,” and “lasting impacts on our society.” These choices communicate the purpose and show some awareness of formal style. However, several word-choice and spelling slips reduce precision: “do the honors” is not the most natural phrasing here, and “kioske” and “rehersal” are misspelled. “Theatre artist” and “services” are understandable but could be expressed more precisely in context. This performance meets the task’s vocabulary needs and shows some ambition, but more accurate collocations and careful proofreading would provide the flexibility and control needed for a stronger result.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a new theatre … that is ‘Town Square’” and a reason clause beginning “since.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I am Zara Shiakh and working” needs a parallel verb form (“I am … and work”), while “My company is planing” needs a correctly formed verb phrase (“is planning”). The sentence “The ceremony going to be held” is missing an auxiliary, and “your contribution …” does not fit grammatically with “you have started” in the same construction. There is also an agreement issue in “plays which has.” Review complete verb phrases, clause structure, and subject–verb agreement to improve accuracy.
