Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Shahrukh Khan,
I hope you are doing well. I, Het dalal, am writing this letter on behalf of Maddocks Entertainment Company to cordially invite you as the chief guest for opening of the Rajhans Theatre in Surat City.
To begin with, The Rajhans theatre is located in one of the busiest and posh areas of the Surat City in Gujarat province. It has 20 screens which can accomodate ten thousand people in a sitting. Additionally, some of the screens are equipped with the latest 4D technology which gives audience an impression if they are experiencing the movie in real life. Unlike other theatres, this one has game zone and food court which can be enjoyed by customers after watching the movie.
I would like to make a humble request to invite you for the opening of our cinema on 20th October at 7 pm. We are expecting around 2000 people to join us for this ceremony. Hence, we would really appreciate if you could make our event auspicious by your presence.
The reason for inviting you as chief guest is because you have a huge fan following throughout India. Hence, people would be extremely happy to see you as a special guest for ribbon cutting ceremony.
Thank you for your consideration. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Het Dalal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you describe the theatre’s location and facilities, make a direct invitation for the opening on 20 October, and explain that Mr Khan’s popularity would make him an appealing guest. The details about the screens, 4D technology, game zone and food court give the reader a useful picture of the venue, while the expected attendance adds context to the event. The reason for choosing him is relevant, though it is more briefly developed than the theatre description; you could strengthen it by linking his career or contribution to Indian cinema to the company’s aims. Overall, the purpose and tone are clear, with ideas extended and supported, although the justification is somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical sequence: introduction and invitation, theatre details, event arrangements, and the reason for selecting the actor. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Additionally,” “Hence,” and “The reason for inviting you” help signal relationships between ideas. The closing is appropriate and the reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some linking is slightly repetitive, particularly the use of “Hence” in consecutive sections, and “To begin with” is a somewhat mechanical transition for a formal letter. More varied, natural links and a smoother connection between the invitation and the explanation of why Mr Khan is suitable would make cohesion less noticeable and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for a formal invitation, including “cordially invite,” “equipped with the latest 4D technology,” “fan following,” and “ribbon cutting ceremony.” These choices communicate the purpose and details effectively, and there is some awareness of formal style. A few collocations and expressions are less natural: “in a sitting” would be better as “at a time,” “make our event auspicious by your presence” is overly ornate, and “an impression if they are experiencing” is not idiomatic. There is also a spelling error in “accomodate.” Aim for precise, natural phrasing rather than elaborate expressions, and check spelling and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, and many are controlled accurately, such as “We are expecting around 2000 people to join us for this ceremony.” The conditional invitation, “we would really appreciate if you could make our event…,” also shows an attempt at more complex phrasing. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “for opening of the Rajhans Theatre,” an article is needed before “opening”; “I, Het dalal” needs more natural punctuation and capitalization; and “an impression if they are experiencing” has an incorrect clause structure. The sentence beginning “The reason for inviting you… is because” is also awkwardly constructed. Review articles, clause patterns, and sentence punctuation to make complex sentences consistently accurate.
