Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Greenwood,
My name is Harman Kahlon and I am the chief executive of ciniplex cinemas. I am writing this letter to invite you as a chief guest in the grand opening of our new theatre at Mumbai's downtown.
Our team has worked hard to improve the facilities we offer to the customers. Despite being new in the market, we have gained quite good reputation. This has been because of the work we present. The audio quality to ultra dimension vision screens, everything has been upgraded and installed in the new halls. Apart from this, there will be an arcade and food court.
I have grown seeing your pictures and from your life journey, I have learnt to be resilient and hardworking. When discussing on the inaugration ceremony, one thing I was sure about was, "the guest of honor". The screen presence and the love people have for you is tremendous.
I would really appreaciate if you accept my invitation.
Looking forward to a positive response.
Yours faithfully,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter covers all three required points: you describe the theatre’s upgraded screens and audio, mention its arcade and food court, invite Mr Greenwood to the opening, and explain your admiration for his resilience and screen presence. The invitation is clear and the reasons are relevant, so the main purpose is achieved. Some points, however, are less fully developed: the opening invitation does not specify a date or what you would like him to do at the ceremony, and the theatre’s information is presented as a list rather than showing what makes the venue distinctive. The personal reason for choosing him is promising but could be linked more explicitly to the theatre’s aims or audience. Adding these details would make the letter more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and invitation, a paragraph about the theatre, a paragraph explaining your choice of guest, and a polite closing. This makes the purpose easy to follow. The progression within paragraphs is less smooth in places, however. For example, “Despite being new in the market” is followed by a claim about reputation without explaining the connection, while “Apart from this” introduces the arcade and food court mechanically. The shift from your personal admiration to the ceremony is also abrupt. Use clearer links between the theatre’s qualities, its intended audience, and why Mr Greenwood is an appropriate guest. A more specific closing request would also help the letter finish with a stronger sense of direction.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal invitation, including “chief executive,” “facilities,” “reputation,” “resilient,” and “screen presence.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some are more specific than basic everyday language. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that reduce precision, such as “invite you as a chief guest,” “ultra dimension vision screens,” and “the work we present.” Spelling errors in “inaugration” and “appreaciate” also affect accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe the venue’s “state-of-the-art screens and sound system” and say that you would be “honoured if you could open the theatre.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both straightforward sentences and some more developed structures, such as “Despite being new in the market, we have gained quite good reputation” and “When discussing on the inaugration ceremony, one thing I was sure about was…”. The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions are present. Examples include “invite you as a chief guest” (the pattern should be “invite you to be…”), “discussing on” (use “discussing”), and “I would really appreciate if you accept” (a more accurate form is “I would really appreciate it if you accepted”). Articles are also missing in “gained quite good reputation.” Review verb patterns, conditional forms, and article use, while retaining the mix of sentence structures you already attempt.
