Student answer (Band 6.0)
21 October 2026
Auckland, New Zealand
Dear Justine Bieber,
Great day! I am writing this letter in behalf of the Auckland Theatre Academy to invite you to be our Guest in the opening of our new theatre on 5th of December 2026.
Auckland Theatre Academy is an establishment run by the Auckland City Council that shows performances of our local artists performing cultural dances and music.
Your contribution to the Arts and Performing industry has been a great influence to our artists and aspiring performers, which make you the perfect guest in the opening of our new theatre. If may we also further request for at least one short act or message during the event, we would greatly appreciate it.
The new theatre will give more artist to show their crafts and would also means more performances to watch by our local community.
We hope to hear from you soon. Please feel
free to contact us at [redacted phone].
Yours respectfully,
Ariane Juano

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter covers all three required points: it describes the theatre and its purpose, invites the actor to the opening on 5 December, and explains that their contribution has influenced local artists and aspiring performers. This makes the invitation relevant and gives the reader a clear reason to accept. The explanation of the theatre’s role is useful, but the actor’s suitability is less fully developed: the influence on performers is asserted rather than illustrated, and the request for a short act or message could be framed more clearly as optional. The response therefore addresses the task, with some points developed more fully than others. To strengthen it, add a specific link between the actor’s work and the theatre’s artistic aims, and make the invitation’s details more complete and polished.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The information follows a generally sensible order: the purpose of writing comes first, followed by background about the theatre, the reason for choosing the actor, and a closing request. Separate paragraphs help distinguish these points, and the reader can follow the overall message. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “If may we also further request” interrupts the explanation of why the actor is suitable, while the paragraph about the theatre’s benefits appears after that request without a clear transition. The closing is also split across lines in a way that leaves “Please feel free” unfinished at the line break. Group related information more deliberately and use a brief transition to connect the theatre’s community role to the invitation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for a formal invitation and includes relevant terms such as “performances,” “cultural dances,” “aspiring performers,” and “local community.” These choices communicate the theatre’s purpose and the actor’s potential influence. There are also attempts at more formal or less common wording, but some combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “in behalf of,” “Guest in the opening,” and “show their crafts.” “Great day!” is also not a natural opening for this kind of letter. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and formality. Aim for conventional collocations and a consistent professional tone, for example, “on behalf of,” “guest of honour at the opening,” and “showcase their work.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter uses a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, including a relative clause in “an establishment run by the Auckland City Council that shows performances…” and a reason clause explaining the invitation. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “which make you” should agree with the singular idea it refers to, and “If may we also further request” is missing a subject and has an awkward clause structure. In “would also means,” the verb form after “would” is incorrect; “more artist” also needs a plural form. There are some issues with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “on 5th of December.” Review agreement, modal verb patterns, and sentence construction, then proofread for small punctuation and formatting slips.
