Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Davido,

I am excited to let you know that, the company I work for is opening a new theatre soon. It has a capacity of accomodating two thousand people and is located in the centre of London. The stage is beautiful and spacious to perform. It is going to be a centre of attraction since it is accessible to all anemities.

It is a great pleasure, to invite you to open the theatre on the christmas eve. We are expecting a huge turn around because tickets are selling fast. We are willing to agree on the payments and conditions of the service.

We have identified you as the best candidate to do this job. Our previous experience working with you has been a great impact in our organisation. Your music has proven to be the best so far and it touches the heart of many. In addition your music reunites people from different cultural backgrounds.

Accepting our invitation will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Ruth

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requirements: you describe the theatre’s capacity and central London location, invite Davido to open it on Christmas Eve, and explain his suitability through your company’s past work together and the unifying effect of his music. These details make the purpose clear and the reasons relevant. The invitation and the theatre information are reasonably specific, while the explanation of his suitability is less fully developed: for example, you could describe how his reputation or performance style would attract the intended audience and make the opening memorable. The reference to agreeing on “payments and conditions” also shifts attention towards negotiation rather than the invitation itself. Overall, the task is covered clearly, with some ideas more developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the theatre, makes the invitation, explains why Davido is suitable, and closes politely. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “In addition” connect supporting reasons. The sequence is logical and the purpose remains easy to identify. To make the organisation more polished, connect some details more explicitly—for instance, explain how the theatre’s location or capacity relates to the expected audience. The short final paragraph repeats the acceptance request without adding much, so it could be combined with a more specific closing that states what response or next step you hope for. Overall, cohesion is effective, though some links and paragraph content could be more purposeful.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “capacity,” “accessible,” “cultural backgrounds,” and “reunites,” which helps communicate the theatre’s features and Davido’s appeal. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, limiting precision. “A centre of attraction” would more naturally be “a major attraction,” while “a huge turn around” does not clearly express the expected success of the event. “The stage is beautiful and spacious to perform” is also awkwardly phrased, and “anemities” is misspelled. The phrase “the best so far” is broad and informal for a professional invitation. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and a consistently courteous register; this will make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple and more developed sentence forms, and the meaning is generally clear. For example, “Your music has proven to be the best so far and it touches the heart of many” combines ideas, while the theatre description uses a relative clause-like structure. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In “I am excited to let you know that, the company…,” the comma after “that” is unnecessary; similarly, “It is a great pleasure, to invite you” should not separate the phrase with a comma. “The stage is beautiful and spacious to perform” needs a clearer grammatical construction, such as “The stage is beautiful and spacious, providing ample room for performances.” More accurate sentence patterns and punctuation would strengthen control.
