Dear........,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Khan,
I am writing in behalf of Star Entertainment Company to invite you at the opening ceremony of a new theatre, which is scheduled on Sunday, 08 November.
The theatre is space-efficient with comfortable sitting area and some backstage facilities, including a cafe, kids' play area, and a parking lot. Our entertainment company believe that the new theatre would attract not only local residents but also nearby visitors, who could enjoy quality-time with their friends and family.
We would be honoured if you could come to this ceremony, as you are a well-renowned actor of our country and has a significant number of fans following. Your presence would leave a good impression on the new theatre and people may love to join the event enthusiastically. We would highly appreciate it if you could cut the red ribbon and give a short speech at the end of the event.
Thank you for your time and acceptance of this invitation. We are looking forward to your valuable presence at the ceremony.
Yours sincerely,
Rubab

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it gives details about the theatre and its facilities, clearly invites Mr. Khan to the opening, and explains that his reputation and fan following make him a suitable guest. The request that he “cut the red ribbon and give a short speech” also makes the invitation specific. These relevant points are clear, though the explanation of how his presence would benefit the event is somewhat general; for example, “leave a good impression” could be supported with a more precise link to his influence or connection with the community. To strengthen the response further, develop that reason and include practical details such as the venue or time of the ceremony if available. The tone is appropriately courteous throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised in a clear sequence: the purpose appears in the opening paragraph, theatre information follows, and the invitation and closing come afterwards. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, while phrases such as “We would be honoured” and “Thank you for your time” support a polite progression. The ideas are generally easy to follow, and the list of facilities is placed logically within the theatre description. Some connections could be more precise: the move from the theatre’s features to its expected audience is understandable but slightly abrupt, and “Your presence would leave a good impression” does not clearly specify the impression on whom. More explicit links between the actor’s reputation, the audience, and the event would make the progression even smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for a formal invitation and includes some useful descriptive choices, such as “backstage facilities,” “well-renowned,” and “enthusiastically.” The writer also uses a suitably courteous register through phrases such as “We would be honoured” and “highly appreciate.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “invite you at,” “comfortable sitting area,” and “fans following.” “Space-efficient” is also an unusual description for a theatre in this context. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for conventional combinations such as “invite you to,” “comfortable seating,” and “a large following of fans,” and choose descriptions that clearly convey the theatre’s appeal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a new theatre, which is scheduled…” and a conditional invitation with “if you could come.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the paragraphing and punctuation are generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain. In “Our entertainment company believe,” the singular subject requires “believes”; in “you are … and has,” the verb should agree with “you” (“have”). The opening also needs the correct preposition pattern: “invite you to the opening ceremony.” These errors are noticeable but do not obstruct understanding. To improve, check subject–verb agreement and preposition patterns, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
