Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter for cordially inviting you to be guest of hour and do the inauguration of the newly built Tagore theatre in Chandigarh on 28th October 2026
The new theatre is equipped with imax screen that will definitely increase the quality and experience of the audience. Moreover, it has dolby sound speakers which will enhance the audio quality. In addition to this, it has ample space for parking and lot of green spaces in the premises.
I would be delighted if you could attend and be the guest of honour at the grand opening of the new theatre. There is small event held after you do the honours with limited members.
Your outstanding performances in theatre and cinema has inspired countless aspiring artists, and having someone of your stature opening the doors of theatre would bring immense prestige for us.
Please let me know if you are available, we will happily provide further details.
Kind regards,
Amitoz Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requirements: you describe the theatre’s IMAX screen, Dolby sound and parking, invite the actor to the opening on 28 October, and explain that their performances have inspired aspiring artists. The purpose and tone are clear, and the reason for choosing this guest is relevant. The invitation could be more fully developed, however: “There is small event held after you do the honours with limited members” is unclear about what the event involves and who will attend. You could also make the request more direct and specify practical details, such as the expected time commitment or whether the actor would give a short speech. This would extend the ideas while keeping the letter focused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible progression from the theatre’s features to the invitation, the reason for selecting the actor, and a closing request. Separate paragraphs help the reader identify these stages, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In addition to this” make the description easy to follow. The organisation is coherent overall, but some connections feel formulaic, and the sentence about the event after the opening is difficult to interpret, interrupting the flow. The final request and offer of further details provide a suitable ending. To make the progression more flexible and clear, connect the event details directly to the invitation and clarify who will attend and what will happen.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for a formal invitation, including “grand opening,” “outstanding performances,” “aspiring artists,” and “immense prestige.” These choices communicate respect and explain the actor’s suitability. There are also some imprecise or unnatural expressions: “guest of hour” appears to mean “guest of honour,” while “do the inauguration” and “limited members” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Ample space for parking” is understandable but could be more concise. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but more accurate collocations and formal phrasing would make the letter sound more polished and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the relative clause in “performances in theatre and cinema has inspired…” and the conditional structure “I would be delighted if you could attend.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “performances … has inspired” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “There is small event held” is missing an article and has an unclear verb construction. The opening sentence also lacks clear punctuation and has an awkward grammatical structure. Review articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, and divide the opening into a clear invitation followed by the date and venue.
