Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Vivek,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to invite you to open the new theatre which has been build by our entertainment company.

This new theatre is at the 4th floor in a shopping mall called "Alpha one" which is situated near the famous lake known as "Vastrapur". Our theatre is almost ready for viewers but we are waiting for some paper work that needs to be done before the end of next week. We have decided to name it " PVR" because it is the short form of our companies' director name.

I am glad to invite you for a opening cermony of our theatre on "19th September" which is celebrated as World's entertaintment day. It will be a great start for us if you come to our opening ceremony because all our employees are big fan and we always praise your work while starting a new project. I am sure that you will bring good luck to our theatre.

I think you would be a good person for us to open the theatre because we all know you have born and raised in this area where we are planning to open a theatre. I am pretty sure that you will bring lots of audience to our theatre because they feel very proud that you born in this small area and became one of the most world's famous superstar.

Thank you for your time and understanding. Looking forward to a reply from your manager.

Kind regards,

Abhi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: it gives details about the theatre’s location and name, invites Vivek to the opening on 19 September, and explains his local connection and popularity as reasons for choosing him. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the reasons are relevant and supported with details such as employees being fans and local people feeling proud of his success. This meets the descriptor for covering every part with a clear purpose and developed ideas. Some claims, particularly that he will “bring good luck,” are general rather than persuasive, and the invitation could be more complete by specifying what you would like him to do at the ceremony and asking whether he is available. A more precise, formal invitation would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes the venue, and the following paragraphs make the invitation and explain why Vivek is suitable. This clear paragraphing helps the reader follow the letter, and links such as “because” make the reasons understandable. The response therefore has a coherent overall structure. To make the progression more polished, use transitions more flexibly and avoid repeating the same justification pattern: “because” appears several times, while “I am sure” and “I am pretty sure” introduce similar claims. The closing also shifts to “your manager” without explaining whether the actor should reply personally or through a representative. A more direct, consistent closing would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main details, including “opening ceremony,” “employees,” “audience,” and “famous superstar.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and naturalness: “cermony,” “entertaintment,” and “paper work” are inaccurate forms, while “big fan” and “bring good luck” are informal or imprecise for a formal invitation. Some phrases also sound unnatural, such as “open the theatre” when referring to a ceremonial role. Aim for accurate spelling and more formal collocations, for example “attend and officially inaugurate the theatre” and “attract a wider audience.” This would make the message sound more professional while preserving its warm tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I am pretty sure that you will bring lots of audience to our theatre because…” The intended meaning is generally clear, but errors in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “has been build” should be “has been built,” “you have born and raised” should be “you were born and raised,” and “a opening cermony” requires “an opening ceremony.” In “all our employees are big fan,” the plural subject needs a plural complement. Review these recurring patterns and check each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause. More accurate control of these structures would make the invitation easier to read.
