Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response makes a relevant start by mentioning a new theatre and its location, but it does not complete the letter’s main purpose. It does not clearly invite the actor to open the venue or explain why this person would be suitable; “This has become the talk of town lately” is not a reason linked to the actor. The detail about the downtown area and parking lots is also incomplete, so the reader learns little about the theatre. The response is substantially below the required minimum of 150 words, which leaves the task very minimally addressed. To improve, cover all three bullet points explicitly and add specific supporting details, such as the opening date, facilities, and the actor’s connection to the community or theatre.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The opening is recognisable as a letter, and the two short paragraphs give the response a basic structure. The ideas are broadly related to the new venue, but there is no clear progression from introducing the theatre to making the invitation and explaining the choice of guest. The final phrase, “The area covers a significant portion of parking lots,” does not develop the previous point clearly and leaves the information unfinished. Because the response ends so quickly, links between the required points are absent. A clearer sequence would be: introduce the theatre and its features, state the invitation, then explain why the actor is an appropriate guest and provide practical event details.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate a few basic details, including “opening,” “downtown area,” and “parking lots.” There is also an attempt at a more formal phrase in “This letter is to inform you.” However, the range is narrow for a formal invitation, and some expressions are imprecise or unnatural: “a county where you live” is unclear, while “the talk of town” is missing the usual article and does not convey a specific reason for the theatre’s importance. “Cinema hall” may also be less suitable than “theatre” for the venue described. More precise language about the venue, its facilities, the ceremony, and the actor’s achievements would make the message clearer and more appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, such as “The cinema hall is located in the downtown area,” and these are generally understandable. There is an attempt to form a longer sentence with “This letter is to inform you about the opening of a new theater in a county where you live,” but the structure does not express the intended relationship clearly. The phrase “The area covers a significant portion of parking lots” is also difficult to interpret grammatically because the relationship between the area and the parking lots is unclear. The short sample offers little evidence of a wider range of structures. Practise combining accurate simple sentences with clear clauses for the invitation, reasons, and event arrangements, and check articles and sentence punctuation.
