Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent times, it has become accessible for individuals to either purchase numerous products like hair colour and make-up or go for treatments that help them look younger, such as Rhinoplasty or liposuction. It is definitely a positive development that, with advancements in technology, mankind is able to achieve desired results scientifically.
Firstly, there are a significant number of products available in the market which help adults look younger than their actual age. Make-up and hair colour, for instance, not only help enhance
facial features but also improve confidence in a person. However, they only need to take care of good brands with great quality ingredients, which would benefit them rather than any potential allergy risks. As a result, an individual who uses dye or make-up according to their needs would feel more confident than others.
Furthermore, another key advancement in technology allows certain individuals who are not able to reduce their body fat due to medical conditions to go for liposuction, which is scientifically beneficial for them to reduce weight without complications. Similarly, rhinoplasty can help people to get rid of their nose deformity. Nevertheless, they should go for expert consultation before opting for these procedures to avoid any potential risks. Therefore, just by paying for these small procedures, one can look way younger than their actual age without having any potential side effects.
To conclude, buying cosmetic products or paying for procedures to look younger is definitely a great development, which helps certain individuals to feel more confident and achieve desired results with the help of science with prior expert advise.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both cosmetic products and surgical treatments. You clearly state your position that this is a positive development. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention confidence and medical benefits, the arguments remain quite general. To reach a higher band, you should explore the implications of these trends more deeply—for instance, by discussing the societal pressure to look young or the psychological impact of cosmetic surgery. The conclusion is a bit repetitive, merely restating the introduction rather than synthesising the main points. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of analysis could be improved to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated. For example, the second paragraph focuses on products, while the third focuses on surgery; this is a good structure, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Rhinoplasty', 'liposuction', and 'deformity' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'take care of good brands' (which should be 'choose reputable brands') and 'expert advise' (which should be the noun 'advice'). While you attempt to use more precise language, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive in places. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'look younger' or 'positive development' to demonstrate a wider lexical range and more sophisticated control over your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are occasional errors, such as 'they only need to take care of good brands... which would benefit them rather than any potential allergy risks' (the comparison is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your control of complex structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses is decent. While there are some minor slips, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring absolute precision in your sentence construction.
