IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Nowadays, people have access to a wide range of products and medical treatments that can make them look younger. Although these developments can have some benefits, I believe they are generally a negative trend because they can create unrealistic expectations about appearance and encourage people to spend excessive amounts of money.

One advantage of modern anti-ageing products and treatments is that they can improve people's confidence. For example, skincare products, dental treatments and cosmetic procedures may help individuals feel more comfortable with their appearance. This can be particularly beneficial for people who have physical features that make them feel insecure. In addition, some treatments originally developed for medical purposes can also have cosmetic benefits, allowing people to improve both their health and their appearance.

However, the increasing popularity of anti-ageing treatments can have several harmful consequences. First, it may encourage people to believe that ageing is something that should be avoided rather than a natural part of life. Constant exposure to celebrities and social media influencers who appear unusually young can create unrealistic beauty standards. As a result, some people may become dissatisfied with their natural appearance and feel pressured to undergo expensive or repeated procedures.

Another concern is the financial and health risks involved. Some cosmetic treatments can be extremely expensive, and people may spend large amounts of money trying to maintain a youthful appearance. Furthermore, surgical procedures and certain injectable treatments can cause complications if they are performed unnecessarily or by unqualified practitioners. For instance, there have been cases in which people have suffered physical problems after seeking cosmetic treatments simply because they wanted to look younger.

In conclusion, although products and treatments that help people appear younger can improve confidence and, in some cases, provide genuine benefits, I believe their growing availability is mostly a negative development. People should be encouraged to take care of their health and appearance, but they should also accept ageing as a normal part of life rather than feeling obliged to remain young-looking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have fully addressed all parts of the prompt. Your position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. You provide a balanced view by acknowledging the benefits of anti-ageing treatments in the second paragraph before presenting a strong, well-supported argument for why this is a negative trend. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the discussion on societal pressure and the physical risks associated with cosmetic procedures. The essay is well-structured and directly answers the question of whether this is a good or bad thing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the ideas flow smoothly from one to the next. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'In addition', 'However', and 'For instance', which help to guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words; the structure feels natural and professional throughout the entire piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'unrealistic beauty standards', 'unqualified practitioners', and 'genuine benefits' show a good command of topic-specific language. You use less common items appropriately, and your word choice is generally accurate. While the vocabulary is strong and fits the context well, it could be pushed slightly further toward more sophisticated or academic collocations to reach the highest band, but it is certainly more than adequate for a high-level response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your control of grammar is excellent. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses and subordinate clauses, with high accuracy. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to enhance readability. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The flow of the sentences is natural, and you demonstrate a high level of flexibility in your writing, which makes the essay very easy to follow and engaging to read.
