IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In today's world, everyone wants to look young and attractive; therefore, they purchase anti-ageing products or spend a lot of money on medical treatments to look younger. In my opinion, people should admire their natural look and avoid the use of costly products. This essay will discuss both views with relevant examples.

To begin with, nowadays nobody wants wrinkles, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and many more problems on their face. Everyone wants bright and shiny skin, and to achieve that, they spend a lot of money on products and treatments. As a result, it increases their self-confidence and outer beauty. For example, one of my friends had dark circles on his face; hence, he used to downplay himself at work. However, after the treatment, he felt confident about himself, which also improved his productivity and efficiency at the workplace. Moreover, the use of these products helps people grow in their careers. Many actors and actresses use products to look young so that they can get younger roles in movies and series.

However, there are many drawbacks of these products and treatments. First and foremost, sometimes these products or treatments show side effects, which cause lifelong suffering and pain. For example, my brother had plastic surgery, but his face became red after treatment, which also changed his facial structure. Furthermore, to buy these products or to have these treatments, people take loans and borrow money, which puts them under a financial burden. What is more, people should admire their natural facial features rather than using products that might cause health problems in the long run.

To sum up, people should appreciate natural beauty, and if they want to use products, they should use them for skin improvements, not to change the natural structure of their body.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing both sides of the argument and a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on self-confidence and the potential for financial or health-related drawbacks. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'actors and actresses' is a good example, but the argument could be further extended by discussing the societal pressure or the psychological implications of these trends. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points while offering a balanced perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'As a result', 'However', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas from the benefits of treatments to the potential risks is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'anti-ageing products', 'medical treatments', and 'facial structure'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing. Some word choices are slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'products' and 'treatments'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to express ideas with greater precision and nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using conditional and causative structures, such as 'if they want to use products, they should use them...'. While there are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'downplay himself' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'many more problems on their face' (which could be phrased more formally), these do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence control is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
